Hessle area of hull??

We went to look at a house in Beverley yesterday but ended up falling in love with one we stumbled across on the way there instead.
It's in a place called Hessle which I'd never heard of before. All the surrounding area seemed lovely and we could walk to the Humber in 5 minutes which was a huge surprise as I've always wanted to live back by the water.
My problem is that when I've been googling Hull which is the nearest large area so older kids would no doubt go there for shopping, entertainment etc, it's coming up as a bad place to live. I've street viewed the marina, retail area and such and it looks lovely but google says otherwise.
Could anyone give me some up to date info or thoughts on the area?
The houses are certainly not cheap so that usually shows an affluent area so I'm confused 🤷🏻‍♀️

I grew up near Hessle, and it’s a very nice little town. I don’t know what your budget is, but the Ferriby Road area has some lovely houses.

I have fond memories of the place.

Hull itself gets an unfair amount of stick. It’s no better or worse than any other big city and thanks to its brilliantly successful go at being City of Culture a couple of years back, it’s having a bit of a resurgence.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 27/08/2019 07:31

Not an expert on Heddle but DD lived happily in Hull for over 20 years.
It is near Swanland, which is a favoured area. Your main issue in Hull would be schools. I know a couple who moved to Swanland to be near a particular school. Whether Hessle is in the same catchment I don't know.
Wish I could be more help.

My friend is from Hessle! I think it’s lovely.

catsbeensickagain · 27/08/2019 07:50

We used to live in Beverley- Hull has a really unfair reputation. It’s just a big port city with all the issues any of them have. We loved living in the region and Hessle is lovely. It has it’s own high school etc too.

Hessle is a lovely town. Lots of nice independent shops. I also quite like Hull as a place to visit. I love The Deep and the Museums Quarter!

@Pinkarsedfly thanks for the help as it's actually a new estate off ferriby road so I thought the whole road and surrounding looked nice Smile

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather thank you. I've had a little look at the schools and found one from age 3-18 so that surprised me a bit.
Never known a school have such a huge range before Shock

@catsbeensickagain thank you. It was Beverley we fell in love with first but no houses ever become available that are right for us. Seemed to only be a short drive away so feel I'd get the best of both worlds. So hard when you don't know an area though Hmm

@sakura06 I noticed the deep near the marina and a few country parks too. Thank you Smile

Hessle is really lovely and Hull is great. Like any city, it has its issues but it's a great place to be. Been well invested since City of Culture.

Caaarrrl · 27/08/2019 09:56

Hessle is lovely and I prefer it to Beverley. Beverley is so big now that it's more like a small city than a market town. Hull gets a very bad press. There are fabulous museums, shopping parks, restaurants, schools and the uni is highly regarded. Obviously, there are parts of Hull that are not so great but just avoid those like in any big city.

Caaarrrl · 27/08/2019 09:59

The hessle academy they goes from nursery to sixth form is also good.

Catbrat · 27/08/2019 10:16

I live in Hull at the moment, grew up here but moved to Hessle for quite a few years and I miss it so much, it's such a lovely place to live, never had any bother, I wish I never left (made more sense for me to move in with DH than him with me at the time) we are eventually going to move back.
Hull itself has its problems, but I think it does have a unfair reputation as a whole, some of the council estates are very rough, but I think you get that everywhere. The town centre is usually safe but unfortunately there's a problem at the moment with Junkies hanging around, but again, I think most big cities have these problems. Beverley is also lovely, if we don't move back to Hessle, Beverley is our 2nd choice, if your worried about your kids traveling into Hull, then I'd go for Beverley, it's quite self contained, lots of things for teens to do so I don't think they would need to travel to Hull often to meet with friends or do a activity.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 27/08/2019 10:50

Princesconsuelabananahammock there is one in Northampton with that sort of age span and it is very highly thought of, so it can work if well managed.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 27/08/2019 11:06

@Scarletoharaseyebrows thank you, I suppose it's trying to work out which areas to avoid in a city Smile

@Caaarrrl I felt it had a Beverley feel but on a smaller scale. It was the being near the water I loved; it looked like I could take the kids on a walk down there and have a sit with a view Grin

@Catbrat thank you, I did really feel for Hessle as a whole but felt the local cinemas, retail parks etc were where my 2 teens would travel to and not knowing Hull, google made it sound like a junk yard.
Street view and trip advisor reviews spoke on a whole different level though so glad I can get actual local knowledge on here.
The problem with Beverley (it was Walkington we were looking at) is there are no houses for what we need at all so I don't think we'd get our desired area anyway.
A bit more choice in Hessle but fell in love with the Ferriby road development Smile

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather I e never come across such a large school before but I suppose it would help with the usual worry of moving up to high school if they're already around it.
The Ofsted and performance tables are very good so it must work. Smile

I live in a city that has an abysmal reputation nationally. People come to visit and fall in love with the place. A lot of the university students stay and work in the city after graduation, especially those from the south east who realise you can actually have a life here on a graduate wage.

Lots of jobs in tech, finance, film and television.

Every city has it's dodgy estates, pubs and clubs but if you don't use those areas it really won't have much of an effect tbh.

Spend some time in and around Hull - do your own research. People generally leave Google reviews when they are unhappy with something and a good chunk of them are fictional anyway.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 27/08/2019 12:35

@Weezol thank you for reply. I think I know deep down that it's a lovely area but so hard to wonder why it's ranked in the bottom of unhappiest places to live.
Like you say though, everyone I speak to from there as said it's lovely and how they'd not live anywhere else Smile

DD says Hull people think Hessle is a step up 😊 It's also in East Riding which is generally considered a good thing.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 28/08/2019 08:36

I've only recently visited the whole East Riding area and I must say, it is lovely 😊

I love Hessle. There is an excellent school not far away South Hunsley though usually oversubscribed. Check out their results, they do better than many selective schools.
As for Hull it's not a glamorous city but the people are lovely and I think it's reputation is undeserved. It's also a very cheap place to buy a house, though Hessle prices are higher than some other parts of Hull.
