Hessle area of hull??

We went to look at a house in Beverley yesterday but ended up falling in love with one we stumbled across on the way there instead.
It's in a place called Hessle which I'd never heard of before. All the surrounding area seemed lovely and we could walk to the Humber in 5 minutes which was a huge surprise as I've always wanted to live back by the water.
My problem is that when I've been googling Hull which is the nearest large area so older kids would no doubt go there for shopping, entertainment etc, it's coming up as a bad place to live. I've street viewed the marina, retail area and such and it looks lovely but google says otherwise.
Could anyone give me some up to date info or thoughts on the area?
The houses are certainly not cheap so that usually shows an affluent area so I'm confused 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hessle itself is not very lovely. The pedestrian area has a number of empty shops. It struggles to thrive. The road you like has beautiful houses but it is a small area. If it doesnt have to be new have a look at The Triangle area in North Ferriby as an alternative. Assuming school is South Hunsley which has good reputation but you need to be in catchment as usually oversubscribed.

If you decide you want to be by the water look at Barton over the bridge. Loads of people commute from there into Hull.

Hull is fine for teens in the daytime for cinema etc. Beverley is quieter & safer for late at night.

If you want to spell out more what you need from area I'll try to help or DM me.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 29/08/2019 07:01

Barton is not particularly friendly. I would stay the Hull side if I were you.

Mikeyjl58 · 29/08/2019 09:38

Hessle is one of the best areas with plenty of facilities. Hull has also come on well since the city of culture. Visit the freedom Festival this weekend. Areas like Swanland and more affluent, but a lonely place indeed!

princesconsuelabananahammock · 29/08/2019 09:46

Thanks again for help. We looked into the catchment area of the house we liked and the schools are not the best to be honest so looks like that's a no.
Still no houses coming up in Beverley or Walkington that we're our first choices but found some on the Beverley side of Cottingham.
Does anyone know anything about that area at all before I start to delve deeper again.
This moving areas is really hard work 😕

@LoveGrowsWhere you seem to know the areas well so would you mind giving your opinion on the question above 👆🏼
With one child at uni, one at college and one at primary it needs to suit all ages but struggling with houses so area help would be a huge help. I know nothing on cottingham at all but seems very near to Beverley Smile

I would choose Cottingham over Hessle. There is a new development going up on Harland Way if want new. Westfield primary is the one you want. Secondary school is getting better. Friends child has just got great results in 2 gcses taken in yr10.

If you like Walkington also look at Tickton. Same secondary schools catchment.

If you give an idea of budget & no. of bedrooms we might come up with some useful ideas.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 29/08/2019 10:09

Have a look at the other side of Hull too. Hedon is a lovely place to live. It's classed as a town but it has more of a village vibe. I grew up there and it's a great place to raise a family.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 29/08/2019 10:11

@LoveGrowsWhere thanks, I can't find that primary school at all though but found the secondary.
We have an odd mortgage dilemma because of our jobs; we'd be able to go to £550k on a new build but only £495k on a pre owned.
We found a great new build in Walkington but it's too small and all the pre owned around Beverley are too small or very dated (or very expensive 😆).
We can do 4 bed but 5 is the ideal as we'll have family visiting with us moving away and we're terrible with diy so definitely looking for a house which doesn't need anything doing, a project is my worst nightmare Confused

This is on the one of the most desirable streets in a 50 mile radius. It's a buyers market round here so definitely worth a chat to the agent.

Great primary & good secondary. Village shops, 2 pubs & leisure centre in walking distance.

LoveGrowsWhere · 29/08/2019 10:39

The Cottingham primary

Good village with amenities. Catchment South Hunsley.

I like Hedon and could live there but it adds on a lot of travel to anywhere and the secondary school is dire.

NotWavingButMNing · 29/08/2019 11:22

I was going to suggest South Cave. Lovely small market town. Near enough to Hull and not much further to York. Also in catchment for good schools.

Hullteacher · 29/08/2019 11:31

I teach at a Hull school - as others have said, Hull’s reputation is rather unwarranted. The areas that our students go to to socialise tend to be dependent on the area where they live, but if they’re heading into the town centre for ‘Leisure’ type activities, they’re probably looking at St Stephens, Princes’ Quay or one of the out-of-town parks like Kingswood - all of these as safe as similar areas in any big city and certainly I’m not aware of any of our students having problems. Hope that helps!

Hullteacher · 29/08/2019 11:33

And Cottingham is lovely. One of my close friends lives there and a couple of relatives do too. There are posher areas within it. I always get stuck at the railway gates though!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 29/08/2019 13:35

DD was in halls in Cottingham at The Lawns. Is that still there?
She has friends who live very happily in Cottingham.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 29/08/2019 14:12

As someone who grew up in this area and then moved back after 12 years in Edinburgh/East Lothian, I’d say Hull suffers unfairly in terms of its reputation. I live in one of the west Hull villages and love it. Beautiful countryside, friendly locals, easy to get to Leeds/York for decent shopping (which isn’t one of Hull’s good points). Beverley is nice too, but you do pay a premium for property there. South Cave is very nice, as are Ferriby and Welton. The west side of Hessle is lovely too and I believe the reputation of the secondary is improving. Lots of nice restaurants, cafes and independent shops around too, especially on The Weir and Prestongate. Someone above mentioned a lot of empty shops in the pedestrianised street, but I can’t say I noticed last time I was there a few weeks ago. I don’t think you’d regret moving here :)

LoveGrowsWhere · 29/08/2019 14:42

Glad The Lawns is still there. Speculation won't be for long. A lot of accommodation been built on main campus in last couple of years.

Islets The Weir does have nice independents, been there 3 times this month for lovely computer repair man. Prestongate had multiple empty shops & looked tired IMO.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 29/08/2019 15:37

Lovegrowswhere not surprised, as it must be pretty dated by modern standards.

Nifflerbowtruckle · 29/08/2019 15:43

Cottingham is lovely. I know the Hull/Cottingham area very very well. I'd go Cottingham but I wouldn't go for a new build. Some of the older houses are cheaper with better proportions and more space between them.

KKJ1980 · 29/08/2019 15:55

Hi, I live in Hessle on Ferriby Road. It is a lovely place to live and so close to lots of different things for example the Foreshore and Country Park and Hull City Centre. My two children go to the local school and have thrived.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 29/08/2019 15:56

Sorry for late replies but I've practically spent the whole afternoon googling and street viewing all the places that have been mentioned. It would have probably been quicker to drive there and look around as I'm only about an hour and half away 🤦🏼‍♀️

South cave looked gorgeous but not enough for the kids so I'd no doubt end up doubling as a taxi lady like I do now 🙄
Swanland seems very expensive for a little area which says a lot but not a lot there again.
Cottingham definitely seems to be an area I need to look into more as so far it seems well located for kids, good schools and easy commute for the hubby (I work at home so just want a pretty garden or view at least).
I still keep thinking of the house I loved in Hessle so will look into that area more but also houses in Kirk Ella that's been mentioned (what about Alanby?)

I love York too so anywhere with easy links to there is a huge bonus for me ❤️
I did start to look at Market Weighton but thinks that's going too far out again 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love this house for sale in cottingham.

Market weighton is closer to Hull than York although it is a village rather than a town.

LoveGrowsWhere · 29/08/2019 16:19

Isn't this the same developer with plans in Walkington? (Too much time on my hands today while doing taxi duties Grin ).

Anlaby has some nice areas such as Tranby Lane. You could walk to the same leisure centre as mentioned for Kirkella to the other side it becomes a bit takeaway land.
