Looks like everyone is making fab progress, to those using spotlights are they led? I am really struggling with flooring. I don't like laminate, love tiles but worry about being slippy and very hard on toddler heads. We will carpet upstairs but want something washable downstairs. I am running out of options, generally we would fit ourselves as budget is painfully tight anyone used anything they have been impressed by.

soakedat3 · 02/10/2019 12:28

Ours are led and we went for tiles but our girls are not toddlers. A lot of the lux vynl looks really good. Think amtico was mentioned recently.

We have builders today after a 3 day absence... They are outside enjoying my old little patio while looking at the pile of gravel that will be the new patio...

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/10/2019 13:10

My builders have stepped up /panicked with the looming deadline of tiler booked tomorrow to self level the floor.
There are 4 of them plasterboarding at an Olympic level .

I actually wanted to go out but that would mean moving 3 vans that are blocking me in and I don't want to stop them! So I'm staying in until they are finished....
Which might be quite late!

Are you getting your way and tiling going under cabinets @wheredoesthistoiletgo?

Bad news on our larder drawer front. - - rat bastard-- supplier saying that it'll not work with 3 drawers under worktop level as door won't go on so fitters will need to move the previously unmovable shelf. Angry He's still blaming fitters as well!

So it'll be 3 hopefully deep drawers with first shelf starting at above worktop level.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 02/10/2019 20:32

@soakedat3 larders are nothing but trouble!

Yes, floor tiling hopefully starts on Monday, but I have had to delay kitchen installation by 3 weeks

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 03/10/2019 12:23

This floor is taking a LOT of levelling!

I took a few of the wood effect tiles out to show the tiler and the good news is that I still love them!
The little sample I had didn't really show me much and I was worried they were going to be too dark or too grey toned, but they are ok.

Drawer gate is finally over! Not without one more day of trauma for the joiners!

The up shot is (I will need to put this into lessons learnt I think) you need to factor in drawer depth, drawer width, door hinge placement and door hinge type.

For a 600 larder:-
You can fit 3 drawers (1 shallow and 2 deep) under worktop level if you have either 500 width drawers and normal hinges at standard hinge positions.
OR
600 width drawers with 165 degree hinges but at bespoke hinge positions.

If you do not then you end up with 2 deep drawers under the worktop level and a big (165mm) gap under the lowest drawer. Which they started to do to, but I objected as it looked a bit odd to me, so they have now modified the drawers to fit rather than wait for a new door with the hinges in the non standard places.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo - Think this means your drawer pack should work!

@soakedat3 www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-unit-white-60282186/

Yes - this shelf.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 03/10/2019 18:20

Good to hear drawers are sorted but it sounds like the suppliers should have given the fitters proper instructions on how to fit them.
I (hopefully) have the advantage that my fitter works for the supplier so they can sort out blame "in house" if it doesn't work.
But the designer did tell me in advance that their standard arrangement was 2 deep drawers only in bottom half and if I wanted a 2+1 arrangement it would require tweaking, which is why he has specified narrower drawers than standard.
Whether this actually happens or not, we shall see!

I LOVE that curved wine rack, I'd be leaving the cupboard open all the time just to admire it.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo are you having underfloor heating? If so how does it work with the floor going in before the kitchen units as I assume UFH won't go under the units?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 03/10/2019 21:15

@chopc No, we're not having UFH. It was originally one of my must-haves but it meant either accepting the floor level being raised a few cm (so a step from hall into kitchen) or else digging down into the concrete floor to get it level.
I hate the ugly bog standard radiators we currently have so instead of spending Thousands on UFH, I am spending thousands on designer vertical radiators.
They are being delivered Monday and I hope I still love them....

We've slowed up but progress made and I recon we will finally be finished next week. We are going away on holiday so fingers crossed when we get back all the remaining things are done!
Hall floor went down today....

soakedat3 · 03/10/2019 23:07

Thank you @wheredoesthistoiletgo. Your designer is already miles ahead of our "designer" with his knowledge. I had no heads up the arrangement wouldn't work even after a follow up visit to complain they'd given 3 deep drawers. Angry The curvy wine racks were meant to have been displayed in a unit under bfast bar but due to "designer" not actually thinking it through the unit wasn't deep enough so we scrapped it.

I cannot wait to see your designer radiators on the wall. They were works of art if I remember correctly. We have big standard white tall ones. Have to say they are handy to stand beside for full body heat up lol!

Fingers crossed for you @noroof. Love the floor! I really like the chevron pattern and had hoped but I know it would've taken even longer if I had asked for it. As it is, new dad thinks this weekend for patio, window cills and basically THE List as he wants to go to a wedding this weekend and not think about the job. Lolol! I also want him to do this so have made sure the list is complete. Mind you, broken down delivery truck meant no paving slabs today. They had better come tomorrow ASAP else that'll be someone else I'll be mad at. The delivery was arranged Wed am so lots of notice and time!

soakedat3 · 03/10/2019 23:11

Thank you for link @MyNameIsJane. That might actually be perfect for cook books!

Noroof · 04/10/2019 04:40

The floor is just laminate... went down super quickly! We have had to limit budget in a lot of places!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/10/2019 09:41

@Noroof I remember admiring your floor when you showed pics of your kitchen and couldn't believe it was sheet vinyl. It's really nice.

And you're right, there are some places that you have to say "enough" with the spending. You've spent your budget on the serious structural stuff - you can upgrade the floor in a few years if you want but you've got the enjoyment of the new upstairs now!

OP posts:
minniemooblue · 04/10/2019 10:57

We've had some progress here and things seem to be moving quite quickly since planning was passed. We had the structural engineer come out yesterday along with a builder we may use.
If we use this builder he has given us the option of getting the outside started before Christmas. He said he can dig and pour the foundations and get us up to damp course level then stop for Christmas. He is sending us his quote tonight and thinks it will be a 16 week project.

Love seeing all the finished flooring and kitchens.
We have sent our plans to Howdens to see what they come up with.
It's all starting to feel a bit real now!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/10/2019 11:27

I know this is a "how long is a piece of string" question, but how long did it take your self levelling gunk to dry before tiling the floor?
Just dry enough to walk on I mean?

OP posts:
Noroof · 04/10/2019 21:23

Yes I think you've got to focus on the big things and other things are less important. We have wood effect laminate worktops as they cost around 300 instead of 3k for granite etc.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 05/10/2019 07:49

Attention kitchen planners!

I saw this on the DIY kitchens instagram feed yesterday morning in case it is useful info for anyone. We will probably try and get our order in before the 31st, as presume there will be a lead time of some weeks. If we're not ready for it (and we won't be, I'm sure!), we will unwrap it, re-wrap it, and put it in a corner somewhere!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 05/10/2019 08:20

I'd love to have the new room all finished and furnished by Christmas, but we are going to put the old furniture back and live with it for a while. Move it round a bit until we see what works.
Wed also like to sort out the patio (or lack of) but we want a month or two without builders!

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 05/10/2019 10:49

We had screwed down plywood for our tile base so I'm afraid I don't know. Is it dry yet wheredoes?

Builders did not manage to finish THE LIST but we are down to 2 half finished big and 2 small items now. Then I might get to see damage of garden. Eek!

minniemooblue · 05/10/2019 11:08

Just had our first builder quote back. £72000 and that doesn't include the final structural detail, kitchen and flooring! I don't think we will be going with them as my husband thinks it's too much to a single storey extension.

soakedat3 · 05/10/2019 11:55

@minniemooblue - that does sound like a lot!!! How many sqm is in the plan? The quotes can vary by so much!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 05/10/2019 12:12

I think some builders quote high when they don't want the job.
