Hi all,
I am planning to move close to junction 21 on the m5 for access to Bristol university. I've seen I great house in banwell but I now realise lots of new housing, an extra motorway junction and bypass are to be built. Does anyone have information on what the view of the local population on this?

I live close to the Morrison’s by j21 but used to live in Banwell, my ex still does. Bypass and j21a been talked about for as long as I can remember and i’m 46! Getting in and out of Banwell and onto M5 for work was always awful, still now if I drop my dc to their dad’s house I wait until after 6pm.

In the most it’s a lovely place to live, my ex has lived there for 25 years, I moved for easier access to motorway as worked in Bristol , 2 months after I bought my house a clinic became available 2 miles away so a much much easier commute!!

There's not going to be a J21a. Highways Agency have categorically said that WSM already has two junctions (because they also count J22 as a Weston junction) and it's not going to get a third.

Banwell itself has RIDICULOUS traffic. It can occasionally take over 30 minutes to get through the narrow bit in the centre of the village. It needs the bypass, which is theoretically being built with/just after the current tranche of development between Banwell and Sandford.

However, unless you're going to be studying at Bristol Uni Vet School it is a long way into Bristol for the uni, probably 50 minutes at rush hour, and there are far more convenient places to live. If it is for the vet school, then as long as you're the Sandford/Winscombe side of the narrow bit, then it's a great location. We lived in Winscombe while DH did a masters at the Vet School and he could be in Langford very easily.

Hi Thank You for your reply.
I will be doing a bit a both campuses.
Currently I live in a rural area so moving to the city would be out of the question.
I have an 8 year old boy and the school s look pretty good. As I don't know the area at all suggestions for any other places would be much appretiated.

The next village along called locking is very nice, park, shops, cafe, hairdressers etc school is great too and good transport links coming

I would have a look at Congresbury and other villages close to the A370 such as Backwell. These options would have good access both to Langford and Bristol university.
Better public transport from Backwell area by train or bus to Bristol city centre. There is only very limited parking in clifton for university staff and they are trying to encourage public transport use.
For an 8 year old I would also look at secondary options. My understanding is that Backwell is the better secondary school.

Thanks to all comments. Very helpful. Keep them coming!
Yes the transport is of particular concern as there is very little parking at both campuses

Would you be looking to rent or buy?

How long are you planning on being there (e.g. is Secondary school a consideration?)

I'd also think Congresbury, Yatton or Backwell, maybe Winscombe or Sandford but they lack the public transport links you may want.

emcbun · 23/08/2019 12:43

I have to buy

I am not sure when Bristol City council is making the decision but a Bristol low emissions zone is planned (just done the Consultation) and one of the proposed options (there are 2) include the university area in Clifton. It won't be put into action for a few years but that's why public transport options are likely to become more important.
I do know people who commute from Yatton, Congresbury and Backwell into Bristol without any problems.
