Downstairs toilet smell

Any idea why my downstairs toilet smells whenever it’s windy/stormy? Smells a bit like drains. Most of the time it doesn’t smell but came home yesterday and could smell it down the hall. It’s an old house and I’d guess toilet was put in about 7 years ago when house was renovated by previous owner.

are you on a flood plain or have high groundwater?

I don’t know but I have the same issue so interested! My downstairs loo only smells when it’s windy/stormy too - fine at other times. I have an 8 year old house.

Not on a flood plain, no blocked drains as far as I can tell but are there other signs? It’s been like this the 3 years we’ve lived here but as I said it’s only an issue occasionally 🤷🏻‍♀️

look for the soil pipe. It might go into the floor. It might go into a duct. The duct might contain a vent pipe, and the vent pipe might be indoors or out, and it might go up to roof level, or it might stop, and be hidden inside a duct.

What does yours do?

Where is the nearest manhole cover?

Is there a handbasin in there? Where does its waste pipe go?

It’s all boxed in so I’d need to take it apart I guess? There’s a drain cover in the garden. No wash basin for some reason.

How far is the drain cover from this smelly WC?

I just checked and it’s only boxed on one side, I can’t get down to look at it or put my arm in but I took a picture and looks like it goes to the floor? The drain cover is probably about 8 metres away.
