Which type of tradesperson should I call upon to install a gas fireplace?

What have you got already? If you are starting from scratch and want a surround installing (mantelpiece, insert etc) then you need a fireplace installer.

To connect up the gas, you’ll need a gas registered engineer, however a fireplace installer will generally know one and sort this out for you (but you pay them separately). That’s how it’s worked for us both times we’ve had it done.

If you already have the surround and just need the gas fire bit (the bit that actually lights eg Nu Flame) then you might just need the gas engineer, and either buy the fire yourself online or as them to supply it supply it.

@minipie I want to change the existing gas fire to a modern one

Ok, so a gas engineer will be needed to disconnect the old one and connect up the new one. Then anything else is cosmetic ie the bit that goes around the flames. If you’re getting a stone or metal surround then I’d use a fireplace fitter, if not, then it’s more of a job for a decorator (or you if you’re up for it) to make good any damaged bits from taking off the old gas fire.
