Is it a terrible idea putting my house on the market in August?

Best laid plans huh? So... after formulating a Grand Plan of moving house in the spring, we've seen a house we rather like and so we are thinking of putting our house on the market now. I know this goes against all the conventional wisdom about when to sell your house, and its playing on my mind. So I thought I'd ask the collective wisdom of MN! Do you think its a bad idea?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.

I'd just put it on and see what happens. If you get no takers then take it off the market and try again in Spring.

We bought our house last August, it'd been on the market for a few days I think. We didn't have to sell though so that helped.
Good luck, hope you get the one you love!

Should say, we first viewed it in August. Exchanged obvs months later lol.

Yes put it on. There are two big moving in times: before school starts and before Christmas. Of course people need to buy and sell all year round but now people will be returning from holidays over the next few weeks and starting to look.

Lots of people are away in August - as long as you're prepared for viewings to be quiet till people are back from holiday you'll be fine. Hope you get the house you want.

Some people say August/September is a great time to go on the market as you get people who want to be in before Christmas..........!!

I can see a lot of houses going under offer within a week around here so it can work.

Thank you so much everyone, that's really reassuring!

Last August our current house went on the market on the monday and we had our offer accepted on the Thursday (they also allegedly had another couple who offered). I guess it depends on the house/area!

Well mine goes on the market next week, so I'd obviously say to put it on.
I've offered on, and had offers on, houses at all times of the year.
