Carpet vs underfloor heating

Possibly a silly question - but can you carpet over underfloor heating?

We've just had an offer accepted on a lovely house that has underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. Toasty warm, and great for hall, kitchen and dining room, but ideally I'd like to carpet the sitting room! Somehow a stone floor doesn't make for a lovely cosy sitting room to me, but I have no idea whether I can put a carpet down instead.

Anyone done this before? Does it work?

Hi yes we have underfloor heating (wet) throughout our ground floor. Half of the floor is tiled and the other hall is carpeted and it's fine.

Thank you! Did you have to get a special type of carpet or is a normal wool one ok?

I have no idea what type of underfloor heating it is Confused something for the surveyor to check!

Hmm. I'm not sure. I'll check when I get home from work tonight.

Oops sorry just remembered about this! Yes I'm told by DH you will need a different type of underlay to use with underfloor heating. You need one with a low tog value (we used Duralay King). You can lay any carpet on top of this.

You are so helpful, thank you! Smile

We have ufh in our entire house. Upstairs is carpeted with the right underlay and carpet for ufh and it doesn’t ever get quite as warm as downstairs (karndean or tiles). It’s fine, particularly as house is very well insulated, but MIL likes her room to be 23C, which we have never been able to achieve.
