Insurance claim - Water leak

We’ve got a water leak from (we believe) our mains pipe under the kitchen. They can’t start the work to access & identify the cause (& therefore insurance accept liability) until we move out. My question is this - on what basis ‘could’ insurance reject the claim? They seem to refer to gradual damage, but I don’t see how we could have known about it, so that seems unfair? Also we changed insurers in May, could they go back & try & push on to the previous insurers, or does that not happen? Any advice from knowledgable people in this field, gratefully received! Thanks

Household Insurance will not pay for mending the leak. But it will pay for damage caused by the leak, such as wet carpets.

If you have a different cover for pipe repairs (some water companies offer these) then you will have to read your policy.
