Made to measure (but not bespoke) shelving units

We are looking for shelving units (preferably with doors at the bottom) for 2 alcoves in our sitting room. DH originally thought he'd make them himself, but I think he is now sick of DIY and I am rubbish at woodwork!
Does anyone have any recommendations for companies which will make something very standard to your specific measurements? We're not looking for high end, but could probably go up to about £500ish for two of them... Just thinking made to measure may look better than getting something which is ready made but not exactly the right size.
I always assume having a carpenter make them would be more expensive, but perhaps I'm wrong on that? I know there are also companies online which do made to measure solid wood shelving - does anyone have experience of any of them?
Thanks!

Shelving is planks or boards. Anybody with a saw can "make them to measure"

Start with the doors. Consider what size will be an easy fit, and look to see what is available. For example kitchen unit doors are widely sold in 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm and 800mm widths, and fitted bedroom doors are the same thing.

Hiya, we had three carpenters come by and price. We wanted a bookcase with doors on the bottom part in one alcove, and on the other side a tv unit with drawers at the bottom. Because it was made to measure it looks so much better and blends in wonderfully with the rest of the living room.

So I would definitely recommend going with someone who has a portfolio to show you and is local. Ours was just going solo full time so was keen to book in our business as we also plan to do similar work in the bedrooms.

Alternate suggestion - if you check the likes of ikea etc for something that nearly fits, and then hack it so that it looks fitted you can achieve a similar look for probably a fair bit less. But this will depend a lot on the dimensions of your alcove and your willingness to paint it. Zinnsser is our new friend!

Jali?

Jali looks like the sort of thing I was thinking of, but might still be a bit pricey! I might also look into getting a quote from a carpenter. We have access to plenty of reclaimed wood also, so it would be good if we could make use of it somehow!

Have you looked at ShelfStore?

www.shelvingsystem.co.uk/products.asp

I looked into this a few years back and if I remember correctly, they said they could alter the height to specific requirements as well.
