Like DeVol, only cheaper?!

We are building a massive extension (well, massive to us) and will be doing a new kitchen. I like the look of the DeVol shaker style with open walls, can anyone recommend any quality companies a little cheaper?

My sister has this one:

We have this one (grey) in a rental property we recently inherited:

No complaints from my sister regarding fitting, etc and although the one in the rental property was already there when we acquired it I couldn't fault it in terms of quality - there isn't a mark on it after a period of time with several young children in the house.

Where in the country are you?

We had plans drawn up by an independent designer and intended to source our kitchen from DIY Kitchens.

Priced it up at £7,200 for cabinetry which we were happy with for an in frame kitchen in a bespoke painted colour.

Worktops and appliances from elsewhere.

Fitting by a local independent was quoted at £2k.

I then discovered these guys.

pineland.co.uk/hand-made-kitchens/

Bespoke, made to measure, hand made solid wood proper in frame for £7,900. Painted inside and out.

That doesn't include wirework for the larder, bins and a couple of pull outs so there's an extra £400 or so to make it truly like for like but I'm pleased with the price.

To top it all off, their recommended fitter has quoted £1,000 for fitting so all in it's pretty much the same.

They have a pretty long lead time but I'm hoping it's worth the wait.

So far service has been outstanding but the real test will be when it's delivered and fitted in a couple of weeks. I also haven't paid them a penny yet as they don't take payment until the delivery truck pulls up at your house.

My advice, get prices from local independent kitchen firms (proper joinery firms, not chipboard cabinet resellers). You might be pleasantly surprised. Never in a million years would I ever have thought I could get a hand built solid wood kitchen for a similar price to a factory made chipboard one with solid doors.

Try Naked Kitchens, or if you want standard sized units and can do your own design, then 80/20 Kitchens. You will need to find someone to fit it.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 18/07/2019 06:11

We have a similar in-frame style kitchen from Benchmarx which wasn’t too expensive.

Goforitgirl · 18/07/2019 06:18

A lady on here did Ikea units with handmade doors from Shaker Doors. I think it was them but if you search you’ll find it.

We will probably do similar- not sure whether we will use Ikea cabinets or not yet. Most of the other shaker kitchens I just feel the frame on the doors is too wide and clunky. So I want the same width as Devol.

We used Handmade Kitchens Direct and were very happy - totoally bespoke and under £7k for a large kitchen

BarrenFieldofFucks · 18/07/2019 10:57

Thanks all, have contacted a few. I feel like a lot of the generic shaker styles are a bit...don't know, just not quite what I'm after so some of these look great. We're not after a fashionable look per se but something solid and timeless that'll last.

Have you thought of British Standard Cupboards? They are the affordable sister company to Plain English so very like DeVol...

666onmyhead · 18/07/2019 13:54

@AndreaDonno did you have Karen from OnePlan on houzz design your kitchen? (she did our whole groundfloor)

missl1 · 18/07/2019 17:19

Second Pineland. Ignore the terrible name. We have a lovely shaker-style kitchen from them in a very pale grey. Couldn't be happier in terms of price and quality. We also had a couple of awkward, very shallow spaces either side of a chimney breast, for which they recommended a really neat storage solution.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 18/07/2019 19:22

Thank you! Pineland have emailed back twice today confirming they are sending a brochure so I'm liking their service so far 😁

Lowe and bespoke in Devon. Amazing craftsmanship. They’ll travel if you’re not local

Serendipity24 · 09/07/2021 14:20

Hi @Kenworthington I loved Lowe and Bespoke's work on the website. I was wondering if you could give me some rough idea of the expenses?

Thanks in advance!

Alfie and George Cupboards are fantastic. Ive now renovated 3 properties and have used them every time. You have to find your own fitter as they are supply only but that hasn't been a problem for me.
