Think it depends on the angle - I did in heavy rain / hail and it bounced off the tiles through the gap.......light rain probably not such an issue

I'm sorry I'm not quite sure I understand the question.......?! Are you asking in case it lets water in or from a safety point of view?

wowfudge · 13/07/2019 17:03

It depends on the angle of the roof and how far open the window is. We leave an attic window open a bit when it's warmer, whatever the weather.

Apolloanddaphne · 13/07/2019 17:05

Normal rain doesn't come in but sometimes heavy rain does depending on how far open the window is.

if it lets water in and it is triangular roof and it faces the south. not sure if that better explains it, i bad at explaining things so sorry about that.

ps please ignore my messages i sent you, still trying to work this site out. sorry about that.

We have velux in the loft room. If it rains, it's ok if it's open half an inch. More than that, and it lets water trickle down the sill.

Depends a bit what is underneath hit / how much you'd be worried by a spot of rain, and how heavy the rain is.

a light shower, and the window only open a little way - no problem. A "named" storm, or the window open wide, then everything will get wet.

Boom25 · 13/07/2019 17:25

From experience, no. Its ok of raining slighty. Anything approaching a storm and the wind blows it in sideways.

I have one over my bed - if it rains hard it wakes me up but the worst was when I left it open just a little bit too far. The rain collected on the glass and then when it got to much to be held back it all followed the first drip over - it was probably only 2 or 3 teaspoons worth but it was a cold shock to be woken up with when it trickled onto my face at 3 am.

We've got two Velux windows side-by-side (the rectangular ones). If they're open even an inch, rain comes in. Roof is quite a shallow pitch though.

I have mine open year round. At this time of year they are open about 6 inches and I have no problem with rain coming in unless it is a torrential downpour, in which case I would close them to about 3 inches. In winter they are usually only open 1-2 inches so never a problem. I do think it very much depends on the pitch of the roof though.
