Ideas for kitchen island usability question

New house has a kitchen island with a large ish surface and storage underneath but no overhang on the surface. Was thinking about getting bar stools anyway and seeing if people could perch- would this work?

Also any other ideas to use it better? Thinking about storage solutions for the top - maybe some small drawers?

It's not a huge house so every bit should be useful!

What do you mean by storage for the top?

Beetle76 · 27/06/2019 17:01

People can perch and do - its not ideal but people tend to sit sideways. Works well with two perched facing inwards and one pottering on the other side of the island. More than two perched and it becomes a bit uncomfortable...
I wouldn’t bother with anything on top. Having a large clear space is more useful than a cluttered small one.

Why don’t you just change the worktop to a bigger one so that’s there’s an overhang if that’s your preferred option?

tigerburntorange · 27/06/2019 17:29

@JoJoSM2 I might do this, but won't be able to look into it properly until after I move in

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo I'm just wondering how best to use the space - could well be useful prep area but seems very big not to be used - though I guess it could free worksurfaces up to have things (like a microwave!) stored on them - it's a good point

We have a small island 100 x 120 with no overhang.
We don't have any stools mainly cos they would get in the way as there's no spare room to put them.
Theoretically our island has nothing on it.
Theoretically....

How big is this island? Mine is 3.3m x 1.3m. I have back to back cupboards/drawers and no overhang. Central pop up sockets. Sink and hob and an over under the hob. Water softener too! At the end I have a joined on circular wood breakfast bar which seats 4. I would go for storage over seating in a smaller Island every time. If dining seating is nearby and not in a separate room, you don’t need it twice.

An oven under the hob.

If the style of the kitchen and your taste in decor permits those racks that hang off the ceiling can hang loads of pots and utensils freeing up cabinet space eg

Just get the lower height bar stools

BiscuitDrama · 27/06/2019 22:25

We had one with no overhang as we didn’t feel we had the space. We ended up just kind of standing round it. I really wished we’d put a six inch overhang in.
Are you sure you can’t swap the worktop for a bigger bit?

Hmm I wonder if you could put a console table or butchers block at one end of the island and use that as a breakfast bar for perchers. Or even just attach a shelf (wood or marble maybe) to the end of the island with brackets.

As for things to go on top... fruit bowl(s), water jug, other decorative but useful items like a nice chopping board. You could have a pretty box or basket to put mail into (it always accumulates on the island).

Herb pots could go there too
