Has anybody painted the outside of their own house?

Our house desperately needs the gutters repairing and the outside repainting. The windows need sanding and painting too - they are old sash ones. We can't afford to get somebody in, it wouls cost over £1k.

I know it would be impossible to do with ladders but I was thinking we could hire some proper scaffolding, get somebody to sort out the gutters while it is up and then while the weather is good, paint the outside?

There seem to be plenty of YouTube videos!

Yes DH did with ladders. Was terrifying. Never again.

My ndn painted the outside in dribs and drabs over a whole summer. Looks bloody stupid. Patchy, very uneven coverage, really really bad job!
Every other neighbour gets the pros in. Not a flash area but listed buildings and big regs. Not sure how she was able to DIY tbh...
Imo get a proper job done op!
Not dissing your DIY but ndn obviously underestimated the job at hand!

My dh and dsis do hers on a regular basis using ladders , scaffolding is quite expensive .

StarWanderer · 24/06/2019 19:43

Yep! Do mine every few years or so. Best to do each wall in one go to prevent patches iyswim. Scaffolding is expensive but I feel safer, and always tie the ladder on to the scaffolding so it's safe. Use masonry rollers with a deep pile and decent quality paint. Smile

We did ours with a (paid ) friend. Had to have scaffolding to fix the roof, so painted at the same time. It was pretty straightforward.

I'm feeling a mixture of put off and terrified yet still hopeful. While the scaffolding is expensive, it is safer.

Also, this is my idea - DH would let the house fall down before he considers what needs to be done - so I have to do some painting too. The house is painted white anyway but we have brown patches from the leaking gutters.

Any recommendation on paint?

Our neighbour just did his, has his own scaffolding though which is handy. Looks fab, would consider doing ours too actually (bungalow, so no scaffold required Grin).

had the windows, timbered gable, gutters etc painted by a decorator a few years ago on my three storey house. Exterior painting is a bigger job and takes longer than you would expect, and you would need to be really comfortable working at height to be able to do it yourself.

The scaffolding was the most expensive bit (about £1000 iirc), so if you have a few high up jobs to do make sure you do them all in one go!

DavetheCat2001 · 25/06/2019 07:59

We have scaffolding up at the moment as been having roof work done, so OH attempted some painting this weekend but the sheer height ( large Edwardian house) put him off attempting the really high bits.

Builder is coming back this weekend to paint it for us whilst scaffolding is still up.. worth every penny 👍🏻

Our old neighbours painted their house themselves. They got scaffolding and the two of them painted almost solidly for two weekends in a row but it looked great when they'd finished.

Dh has a scaffolding tower and has setup/help a few family members paint their houses. It's hard work and you need a head for heights. You wouldn't catch me up there at all!!

daisypond · 25/06/2019 21:36

Yes, we did. We once tried with a scaffold tower but that felt too scary, but we tried again with proper scaffolding which we hired. We repainted the brickwork, windows, etc. It looked nice when finished and we had people stopping to ask for our business card to come and do quotes for them!

Previous owner of our (new to us) house used to varnish the wooden windows every year up a massive ladder. Nutter.
We know it needs doing but can't find the cash for now...
