Tips for getting quotes for new windows and doors?

I am considering replacing my old rotten single glazed wooden windows with nice new UPVC double glazed ones soon.

I have never had new windows before and have not much idea of the cost. I have visions of contacting a window company for a quote and ending up with a pushy salesman in my house that sits there for 4 hours and who won't leave until I have signed something!

Anyone got any tips on how to get 2 or 3 quotes without ending up in the scenario above? I don't know anyone who has had new windows so can't ask for recommendations.

I got quotes for full re-fit of all windows and doors recently for my house, which are being installed next week.

I got 5 quotes in all; some from local companies, and some from a couple of the big companies. I have to say if you get quotes from Everest or Anglian Homes it is likely you will get the scenario of pushy salesman who won't leave for hours.

The three quote I got from long standing local companies were all quick and straight to the point; no salesman rubbish, just gave me my options and then sent me a quote within a few days of visiting and measuring up.

You will find nobody can give you a quote unless they have a visit to measure and see the job, but I am sure you gathered that anyway.

Local companies will come out measure up and be straight to the point price wise.

Thanks both, will have a look to see if I can find some local companies rather than the 'big boys' so to speak!

I'm sure they can't expect anyone to sign on the dotted line without getting at least a couple of quotes but I've seen too many episodes of Watchdog and the like where you can't get the salesman out of your house!
