New windows or New bathrooms

Just that really, moved to house and the place needs a lot of work. We have a smallish budget so can’t go mad. There is 1980’s ugly silver aluminium crap windows, which we have had a quote to replace with sash windows which would look amazing. Or should we replace our bathroom and add en-suite, I have attached a picture of the bathroom. It’s orange 1970s style. Both the windows and the bathroom work and are clean ect just look really ugly. Both quotes are roughly the same. The house needs loads of decor and carpets ect but we are looking to extend next year so don’t want to risk things being ruined. In order to extend we will have to borrow more in our mortgage so need to really add value. What would you do?

@soontobe60 that was our plan live here for a year before touching it. But I just can’t cope with it anymore.Sad The bathroom is clean and the bath is amazing, ugly but nearly 2m and cast iron. It’s practically a hot tub. Think I’ve been convinced to go with Windows. Building work next year would be a kitchen diner extension so wouldn’t effect bathroom or windows.

These are our new windows (uPVC sash). I love them, plus we used to hear people talking when they walked past, and now it's nice and quiet.

I'd wait a bit and see what annoys you the most. Every house I've bought I ended up replacing the boiler/heating system within 6 months. If the bathroom is just decor and it actually works then you might grow to love it 😁

I’d do windows first. Paint the tiles with tile paint individually with a small roller.
We had a similar bathroom with avocado suite! At least you sanitary wear is white.

I love your bathroom! Go for the windows,I had mine done a couple of years ago - the difference is amazing.

PickAChew · 28/06/2019 23:57

Unless you're washing in a bucket, windows first. You need to be watertight and draught proof, first and foremost.

Windows.

Could you spend a little bit on stuff for the bathroom that played up the retro e.g. orla kiely accessories, nice greenery etc

Floralnomad · 29/06/2019 11:42

Windows , the bathroom you could do quite a bit with cosmetically without spending too much , particularly if you are good at DIY , or know someone who is . We replaced our main bathroom ourselves but my dh is very hands on with work .

blaaake · 29/06/2019 11:57

Definitely the windows. It's a necessity (you mentioned you're in Glasgow) and will lift the whole house. In the meantime before you can replace the bathroom, you could try tile paint/other cheap ideas to improve it temporarily?

Lilmisskittykat · 30/06/2019 08:47

I'll add to the windows vote

I'm in exactly the same situation with buying a new house, husband said get the house warm, water tight and double glazed first

Was a good move - house looks so much better

Bathroom is just gonna have to wait but at least it's useable

Swoopinggulls · 30/06/2019 09:52

Why would you care about people seeing your bathroom? You'll be telling them about your renovation plans anyway.

Definitely do windows to improve efficiency as well as appearance of house.

ravenshope · 01/07/2019 19:47

Definitely the windows.
Can't imagine being embarrassed about a bathroom but you could always buy cheap tile paint/tile stickers from Wilko to keep you going.

soakedat3 · 01/07/2019 22:11

windows! As if you do bathroom first there is a chance the windows later will damage your bathroom finish.

Also, you may think it's not an issue just now when we are in summer but it'll be horrible in winter.
