Only a few posts left on the first thread of 2019, so here's a new one to get us started.

Anyone found a cheap equivalent to Burt & Punch style ironmongery

Fucktuates · 22/06/2019 17:02

No Stokey. Which pains me greatly because I love it. Just spent a while (again) looking at the sockets and switches today. Love the Dowsing and Reynolds stuff too but can’t justify it. Which style do you like? I know there are decent alternatives for their toggle switches but that’s about it.

Stokey · 22/06/2019 19:30

Sorry meant Buster & Punch obvs. Looking for cupboard handles like this. We ordered some from eBay but they're too shiny.

Stokey · 22/06/2019 19:31

Also like Dowsing & Reynolds Fucktuate (& your name!)

Fucktuates · 22/06/2019 21:35

Oh I love those handles!! Tbh I’ve only really looked at sockets and switches because we’re nowhere near the cupboard handle stage Grin

I think stuff like this is one of those things the cheaper ones will just never be the same!! Could you spray the ones you bought if it’s the colour that’s an issue? I want to have Ikea PAX in my daughters room, kind of built in and I feel like those handles or similar would be perfect!!

4yearsnosleep · 22/06/2019 21:37

@WorrisomeHeart they're 140cm x 94cm

Fucktuates · 22/06/2019 21:54

Who is having spots in bedrooms? I CANNOT DECIDE!!!!!!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/06/2019 22:06

We've gradually been adding LED spots to some downstairs rooms but I'm not keen on them for bedrooms as they can shine uncomfortably in your eyes when you're in bed.
We've just changed central light fitting in our room to an LED but it's an uplighter fitting

soakedat3 · 22/06/2019 22:16

Thank you for posting a pic @4yearsnosleep. Ours are smaller than yours (78x98) but hoping that's enough as our room doesn't look as big...I kind of wish I had thought to ask for them to be a bit bigger. I didn't realise that only certain sizes came as electronic so might have been restricted anyway.

@WorrisomeHeart, that will be a great view! I wonder if you could get a local glazier to make you a sloping shower screen. We had one make us up huge mirror to cover a wall years ago.

Hi @Cat882. Your renovation and extension plans sound fantastic! Will you be staying in it while all that's being done? I am thinking upstair will be my refuge once they break through.

Had to ask New Dad to batten down the hatches as there was a yellow storm warning for us for Sun/Monday. It's changed to a yellow heavy rain warning now... SO GLAD we started in summer Hmm. We have a temp guttering set up with duct tape in place. Eek!

soakedat3 · 22/06/2019 22:18

Those are seriously gorgeous (and expensive!!) handles! Maybe if I win the lottery! :D

WorrisomeHeart · 23/06/2019 06:26

Thanks @4yearsnosleep. What size is your extension?

MyNameIsJane · 23/06/2019 06:53

We’ve got LED spots in the bedroom. Also bought these lights for above the stairs. I was pleasantly surprised to see them fitted - they were smaller than I expected but they do the job very well! (Please excuse the lack of cutting in around the ceiling!)

Can I join please? Were not having an extension but have extended some rooms and bathrooms by knocking walls through and putting steels and studs in. We are fully renovating a 1930s detached bungalow.

Has anyone had their diy kitchen delivered recently? Was all okay?

TheFatberg · 23/06/2019 07:33

New doors which need handles and painting, and the start of them knocking through into the old garage. Yesterday was noisy and messy and they're back again today.

@WBWIFE I'll let you know about DIY kitchens as ours is coming next week.

Has anyone gone for a panel rather than tiles in their bathroom? We hadn't really thought about it until looking at a showroom yesterday and quite liked the way it looked. I thought it would be better for cleaning than grout.

@soakedat3 yours are the standard size, ours were spec'd for that too, but we didn't need electric ones as we're North facing so we wanted extra light and didn't need to worry about trying to cool the room off.

@WorrisomeHeart our extension is 9.2mx3.3m, the total room is 6mx 9.2m

lightlypoached · 23/06/2019 08:11

@Fucktuates we have spots in our loft bedroom. very bright so we don't use them much -rely on bedside light.

but they are good for doing makeup!

really lovely to see all these projects coming to fruition.

our 1st draft plans should be here this week. I've been looking at parquet floors. does anyone know if you can use wet underfloor with reclaimed parquet? I know its ok with engineered but I'd love an 'old' floor if we can to counteract the modern everything else.

i posted before about integrated blinds and the builders window supplier doesn't do them. have found a firm that does and awaiting (no doubt eye wateringly expensive) quotes. we are SE facing so window coverings essential.

just want it all to start now!

Stokey · 23/06/2019 08:57

We have spots in our bedroom that were here when we moved in - really dislike them so mainly use lamps.

But I think tech has moved on since then. In the new bit, we'll be getting directional spots mainly and will go for very warm white so they're not too glary.

Would think you could have wet ufh under reclaimed parquet @lightlypoached. They put it down, then cover it with screed, then put whatever floor you want on top. Sure your builder will be able to advise though.

Found out that our final floor is going to take 2 weeks to cure, when we'd originally thought 5 days. It's meant it's pushed our very tight schedule for the kitchen as the joiner is away for all of August. So he won't be able to do the cabinets til September, rather frustrating.

We could go for a 3mm micro-screed product instead which would dry quicker, but now I've seen the 8mm with aggregate, that's what I want. The thicker product is the smaller square.

@TheFatberg - we did our 2-storey extension 14 years ago, which included a new upstairs bathroom. We had the entire bathroom tiled, with a mosaic border around the middle. It looked OK for about 5 years but since then, despite much cleaning, it has started to look gradually worse, the mosaic border in particular. Fortunately, the plan is to rip at all out soon Smile. The shower walls and bath splashbacks will be Aquaboard. Life is too short to worry about grout! HTH Smile

WorrisomeHeart · 23/06/2019 17:29

We have got spots planned in the loft bedroom but I am wavering. There will also be bedside lights with dual switches and the ceiling is low so I guess we’d otherwise have to have wall lights which I don’t really want. We have horrible old spots at the moment but I need to keep reminding myself that the newer ones are better.

TheFatberg · 23/06/2019 17:54

Thank you blodynmawr - for the tip and for giving me the proper name for what it is I'm talking about!

@TheFatberg - I have a corner larder due to be delivered week commencing 8th July. When did they get in touch to arrange delivery please and thank you.

I have flooring booked to be fitted on the 8th & 10th so I am hoping to avoid these dates.

TheFatberg · 23/06/2019 21:07

@MyNameIsJane they arrange their bookings the Friday beforehand. We've not had an exact date yet for this week, and have been told they'll tell us two days before, so we're assuming it'll be the latter part of the week. We were told it was in production last week to be delivered this week, so here's hoping.

@lightlypoached integrated blinds are definitely the best thing we spent our money on. We have a column-less corner of bifolds so there's no way we would have coped with external blinds, plus we have the bifolds open most days from may to October. We used origin is that helps (I know many prefer a thinner profile).

Noroof · 24/06/2019 13:23

Hello... can I join? We are just about to start our extension and I'm really nervous as we have never even had a kitchen done before. We are in a 3 bed bungalow with one bathroom. We are taking the whole roof off Shock and rebuilding it to make enough room for 2 rooms upstairs and a shower room. We are also knocking a galley kitchen into the narrow dining room next to it and installing a new kitchen and patio doors.
I'm really nervous... did I mention that??
I am just trying to finalise the kitchen design and need to decide on doors...I want slab I think but can't decide between gloss or Matt. I also can't decide whether to go for a nice colour like blue or whether to go plain and colour the walls. Eek.

WBWIFE · 24/06/2019 14:12

@Noroof I prefer matt, especially with kids! We are also in a 3 bed bungalow. How exciting for you!
