Distressed furniture

I'm not sure who is going to be more distressed at the end of this project, me or the door!

I've had one of those moments of inspiration that usually lead to trouble. I want to strip the varnish off an old door and paint it a distressed duck egg blue, possibly with some gilding, sort of French style.

I plan to paint it with chalk duck egg furniture paint first. Then, I've found both liming wax and gold wax.

Do I do the blue, (sand it?), then the liming wax, then the gold if I feel I won't make it look daft?

Or do I do the blue, then the gold, then distress it all with a bit of sanding and liming?
