Feeling fleeced by our insurers

Husband found a radiator pipe leaking. Turned it to stop the leak but accidentally opened it, causing black crap to explode all over newly painted walls & carpet. Called our insurers for advise and was told not to clean the carpets but to dry as much as possible and await call back within 48 hours. Never receive any call within 24 hours. Just checked my email with one plain email saying we aren’t covered on our accidental policy as diy or faulty workmanship aren’t covered. We’ve left carpets as advised so no the black crap has well n truly dried in and now they say we aren’t covered!! Any advice. I feel totally fleeced by the insurers 😡

Thanks all!! I guess I was too honest when I contacted them! Lesson learned for next time (god forbid there’s a next time.) I will put together a letter of complaint. It’s worth a try xx

How have they refused cover for DIY when you say the wording doesn't exclude DIY? I assume the policy mentions it somewhere. Which insurer is it? I am an insurance lawyer and know that some insurers just need to a push (complaint) to start playing ball. I have to say though, if something awful happened such as a fire / flood, you'd be thanking yourself for paying out a few £££. That is when insurers are worth the money.

Hi kirinim, I phoned them the other day to raise a complaint and highlighted my policy never mentioned diy. They asked me which policy schedule I had been given! It certainly wasn’t the one they mentioned (paragon). The senior I spoke with said he would put a hold on the complaint and discuss it with a senior. He asked me what I wanted to claim for and I explained it would only be the carpet as we managed to re-paint all the walls. I’m not holding my breath!! To top it all off my dishwasher pipe worked loose last night and flooded my kitchen whilst we were out!! 3rd accident in my house since December when a water pipe worked free in a newly fitted bathroom flooding 3 floors. I give up...
