Holiday Home - West Coast of Scotland

I’m soon to come into an inheritance and want to use some of it to buy a holiday home for my family use and to rent out. I thought Edinburgh originally for year round lettings, but it is just too expensive.

I have family in Skelmorlie, Largs, Wemyss Bay, Greenock so was originally thinking there. I can get some real bargains in Greenock but I know that some areas aren’t great...there are some falta in the West End that look good.

I live in England and my visits tend to centre around the areas where my family are so haven’t really explored other areas, but my question is: if you wanted to buy a bargain property for a holiday let, where would you buy?

This is obviously aimed at people who know that area well. I also have experience of holiday lets (I have one in Spain) so this query is just about the area rather than the pros and cons of rentals.

I don't own a holiday let but regularly rent them. Key for me is the location - most be very close to open countryside, but also have a good pub or two in walking distance. The look of the building matters- we book detached and it needs to look inviting, if it looks like an ex council semi I will look at the next place. We also travel with our dog.

A bargain property isn't a bargain if it's not rentable - there's certain parts far more popular than others, unless visiting people we don't tend to go to random places

If I had the money I'd buy in Aviemore

I know the area you have family in OP. I would say although Greenock is nice, it wouldn’t be my location of choice for a holiday home- too big/urban. I’d say between Gourock and Largs may be more scenic/holiday ish. Inverkip Marina is a good tourist draw, Largsight be good for Millport. I’d also say Gourock over Greenock, near the outdoor pool 🏊‍♀️- but again further along the coast probably more tourist destination like, still with good links to Glasgow by train on different lines.

Largs might*

@cyberworrier thank you. I would consider Gourock - nice shops and cafes there and, like you say, the outdoor pool. Still easy to get to Glasgow and the ferry is there too. Inverkip also an option.

Largs - some great places to eat. Always strikes me as a place for old people (no offence to anyone there - my elderly aunt and uncle live there, hence the association).

Can anyone tell me about further up the coast by Dumbarton way?
