Would I be batshit crazy to build my own BBQ out of bricks with no cement

So I have a small garden/courtyard and some friends are coming for a BBQ in a week or so. I was going to buy a BBQ as I don't have one but a friend suggested I make one out of bricks! My neighbour down the road is throwing out some bricks and he said I can have them so would I be crazy to make my own bbq out of bricks - and no cement?!

Yes.

ilovewinterpansies · 14/05/2019 10:43

Yes, batshit.

Titsywoo · 14/05/2019 10:43

Yeah my brother in law has one of these. Looks great and works really well. You need a bit of metal to go underneath a rack to burn the coals on but I'm sure you can buy that online.

Titsywoo · 14/05/2019 10:44

It's not batshit!

Didiusfalco · 14/05/2019 10:44

Yes. Don’t be daft.

Hobbes8 · 14/05/2019 10:44

So you’d essentially be balancing a big fire on top of a pile of bricks with nothing holiding them up? What have you got against cement?

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 10:45

I had one like this for years. It needed squaring up occasionally but it was fine. It needs to be somewhere no one is going to bump into it though. I did not have children at this time though!

sackrifice · 14/05/2019 10:45

Do you mean a small ground level one with a few tiers on it for the grill? Or a permanent large one at waist height which could tumble if not secure?

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 10:46

a big fire

If you have a big fir, you're doing a BBQ wrong. Are you thinking of a fire pit/chimney thingy?

LoafofSellotape · 14/05/2019 10:46

You don't need cement. Go for it, not daft at all.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 10:47

Mine never came anywhere close to falling down at all.

AgathaF · 14/05/2019 10:47

Go for it. Plenty of ideas for how to do it on Pinterest and YouTube. You'll ned to get a rack for it though.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/05/2019 10:50

We had one. Just make it 3 or 4 bricks high. Couple of feet wide and a foot and a half from front to back. You need a metal plate or maybe a rack. There are loads of them at our tip but we are in Australia. We've got a flash one now but the brick one was fine for a few years.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/05/2019 10:51

I've just remembered that our wasn't even bricks! It was a metal plate balanced on some rocks (in a u-shape).

thistimeofyear · 14/05/2019 10:56

thanks all fab ideas - I'll have a look on pinterest and another look on you tube - the ones I saw earlier all involved cement!
I've nothing against cement at all I just haven't a clue how make cement and lay bricks and also I may not want it to be permanent
I do have a dd but she is a teenager - other kids coming are slightly younger but with 3 very attentive parents between us I am sure we'd be ok - I was a girl guide so I know all about being sensible! ;)x

Not batshit at all.

Even easier to just make a platform out of said bricks and put a disposable BBQ on it.

pisspawpatrol · 14/05/2019 11:11

You can buy easy mix cement powder and a cheap bucket to mix it in from b and q easily. You just mix the powder with water and use it.

thistimeofyear · 14/05/2019 11:26

ballyhockeysticks - fab idea also
pisspawpatrol - maybe I will..tx

Maybe do a fire put design like this one bestfirepitideas.com/how-to-build-a-brick-fire-pit/how-to-build-a-brick-fire-pit-grill/
You can buy the grill the cook the food on to sit on top, and then when you are done with cooking, you have a nice fire put to sit around and toast marshmallows on :)

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 11:36

Remember to stagger the bricks so each layer has a brick centred above the join of two bricks below. When I got to the bit where there would be a half brick at the ends, I just turned a whole brick sideways.

Girlofgold · 14/05/2019 11:38

I think if you don't leave space underneath it EXPLODES 😱😄. Seriously though. Have heard this.

thistimeofyear · 14/05/2019 14:01

Omg it would be just my luck for it to explode ! I will look into this very carefully - all Wine
