Dark Navy Bathroom. Would it be mad?

Dark navy floor and walls. Possibly dark navy vanity unit (else white). White sanitary ware and normal coloured taps and ceiling.

Small suburban windowless bathroom.

I'm really feeling it - like that it would be soothing and calming and cocooning.

Would I regret it?

Other option is pure white - but I'm concerned that would glare the eyes.

I think matt navy floor and ceiling would be too much in a windowless room. If you don't have really bright lights this would be nice. catpillow.co/cobalt-blue-bathroom-tile/cobalt-blue-bathroom-tile-35-ideas-and-pictures-buzzfil-co/

I do like that @chandylier . Though they have a navy ceiling as well - our ceiling would stay white - so on balance they have the same ratio dark:light iyswim....

Lighting idea is to have concealed LED cornicing strip uplighting to the ceiling. Stop tiling a foot below the top to accommodate it.

This isn’t mine as it isn’t finished yet but I am doing something similar to this in my tiny downstairs loo, which happens to have a dado rail - navy above, bright white below, white sanitary ware and floor tiles.

I agree with pp that the photos you posted upthread are an entirely different proposition as the bathroom are large and airy with big windows. A small windowless room would look totally different. The bathroom with the dark ceiling just posted makes me feel on edge. However one person's claustrophobic is another's cocoon, so if you really like it then go for it (I realise you're not having a dark ceiling but I do think the lack of window will have a similar effect)!

LesLavandes · 06/05/2019 11:30

I had this in a small no window bathroom. Not quite navy but close- ceramic mosaics. Everything else white with large floor length mirror and chrome taps, towel rail. The thing you must get right is the lighting. We engaged a lighting designer and it was worth it

Is this mad or genius?

I would actually paint the ceiling dark too. It's an optical illusion - the walls don't just stop and look short. Instead it adds height and makes it cosy. People who say you should paint dark rooms light to make them light and spacious are wrong. If you paint a dark room white you have a dark room that's white. If you have a dark room that's dark you could get something interesting, attractive, dramatic, cacooned. Lovely. Do it and go for it!! I'd buy the best paint you can. Farrow and ball railings is lovely

Bumpdebump · 06/05/2019 14:24

I don't love that bath though tbh.

BlackBathroom · 06/05/2019 15:19

I'm headscratching about the storage - it'd kill the 'invisible wall' idea if it has clutter and random shelves everywhere - so I'm sitting in a ripped out bathroom figuring how I could stash things while leaving the walls relatively flat and featureless

You need storage. Under sink cupboard. Over sink mirror cupboard. A free standing cupboard. A basket with lid for towels/cleaning stuff. And throw a load of stuff away

Bumpdebump · 06/05/2019 17:04

ps I definitely wouldn't tile the whole thing. Costs a fortune and hard to replace/update. I'd do white tiles and dark paint on the walls and ceiling. Giant bath mat from Homesense.

BlackBathroom · 06/05/2019 17:45

The builder talked up tiling the whole thing (though I guess he has a vested interest!

His argument was that it was sleeker to not have 'changes' in wall covering - and that we'd find it easier to keep clean (our existing paintwork is trashed with handprints etc).

The old bathroom had 2/4 walls fully tiled - around the bath and around the sink - and nothing on the rest. Total area floor & wall is 25 sq. m.

Our downstairs loo has a dark grey/lighter grey mosaic effect vinyl floor, dark grey wall panels, grey vanity and white sink and loo. I really like it and we get loads of compliments on it too.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 06/05/2019 18:22

Christ sake, it’s a room where you piss, shit and wash. It needs to be practical, not a style statement. Gloomy with no storage sounds rubbish. Invisible wall? Sheesh, more money than sense! And if you ever sell any prosecptive buyers will immediately knock about 2 grand off your asking price to redo into a usable space.

chandylier · 06/05/2019 18:24

I had this built
Kinda fake wall with all the plumbing below and storage above

@YippieKayakOtherBuckets - That is the bathroom look I just completed for my autistic teen boy. White tiles half way up the walls - subway tiles. Then dark navy walls and gray accents with a gray wood imitation tiled floor and a dark wood vanity. Chrome fittings. It looks cool and my son loves it.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/05/2019 18:28

I need a diagram; I’m a bit confused by your photos.
Is the round mirror in the alcove which you’re going to square off?
Can’t figure out where your bath is....

BlackBathroom · 06/05/2019 18:34

@WeepingWillowWeepingWino - cut me some slack - it's also the room of choice for my autistic teen to unwind from the day. I think that's worth putting a bit of thought into making sure that it is calming, don't you think?

Part of the basis for the idea is that her executive functioning stinks - she's been known to go & have a bath & then get sidetracked while in there and come out not washed - and toothbrushing is not reliable. Hence why I came up with the idea of 'invisible' walls that gave zero visual stimulation, and the pop out white bits being things you're meant to interact with (sink, bath, toilet, towel, soap, toothbrush).

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 06/05/2019 18:44

OK, well, that’s a rather different criteria!

@WeepingWillowWeepingWino - sorry if I was sharp.

Not at all. I was also punchy, mainly because I spend too much time on Rightmove!
