Dark Navy Bathroom. Would it be mad?

Dark navy floor and walls. Possibly dark navy vanity unit (else white). White sanitary ware and normal coloured taps and ceiling.

Small suburban windowless bathroom.

I'm really feeling it - like that it would be soothing and calming and cocooning.

Would I regret it?

Other option is pure white - but I'm concerned that would glare the eyes.

If you have children be prepared to spend hours wiping up dried blobs of toothpaste off the navy. I lived in a house with a dark green bathroom and I found toothpaste marks everywhere!

fedup2017 · 05/05/2019 13:58

We have f and v Hague blue in our tiny dark bathroom. It's fab. Will try and find some pictures

Processedpea · 05/05/2019 14:00

The bathroom in my old flat was navy blue I loved it and we had pine accessories was in the 90s and I still miss it Grin do love a colour

fedup2017 · 05/05/2019 14:10

F and b Hague blue... Looks more green in this photo but closer to navy in real life

Ours is dark slate grey walls with a slate floor and me and ds (both autistic) love it, it's our favourite room, very relaxing.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 05/05/2019 14:19

Sounds fab. I would love it. But I generally love dark colours in rooms. Go for it.

BrokenWing · 05/05/2019 14:26

I love the look of darker colours in professional photos with all the right lighting, but any I've seen in real life look dull, cold and uninviting.

BlackBathroom · 06/05/2019 08:32

I'm not finding any navy tiles in stock.

Is jet black a whole different thing .... ?

(If I go for it, still on the fence)

I've just googled Navy Bathrooms and can't find one lovely one

What do you like then? It would be interesting to know what other people think is lovely, as I'm about to do my house up (again) and love navy.

There are lots of Pinterest that I think look great.

BlackBathroom · 06/05/2019 09:13

My 'design logic' is that the dark walls will make the white sanitaryware & white towels 'pop'. The tiny room means that the white/chrome elements are actually at least half the visible area - so it won't be massively dark - but it will be a bit less glaring than a pale wall, and it makes sense that the bits you're meant to use are the ones the eye is drawn to, while the walls are 'invisible' to not visually distract.

I LOVE the bathroom you linked to op!

When I did mine i also went for little colour variation and no patterns. It's so calm. I hate the mish mash of pattern on the floor and another on the walls.

Dark blue is a classic colour but a brave choice where magnolia/ pale grey is classic but safe. You're the one who needs to be happy, I think of you're drawn to it you will love it!

lottiegarbanzo · 06/05/2019 09:38

I would, with white tiles. Not navy floor to ceiling.

Think about what you'd be looking at when lying in the bath / standing in the shower.

mummyhaschangedhername · 06/05/2019 09:41

I think I would be a little scared especially in a windowless room, however, if it was brave, navy blue (or I prefer teal), with white units/tiles (so that the colour isn't lost and is more defined) and gold/ rose gold/copper accessories) It looks classy and not so overpoweringly dark. Look on Pinterest for ideas.

ASauvignonADay · 06/05/2019 09:45

If the room is bright it could be lovely. I wouldn't do it mine because my bathroom is dark.

If go navy with antique brass fittings 😍 I've seen some really nice navy bathrooms on instagram.. I'm going to go have a look

Bumpdebump · 06/05/2019 09:47

Do it. A friend has painted her windowless bathroom black. Looks great.

ASauvignonADay · 06/05/2019 09:49

Loads of inspiration!

So I might do dark floor, white wall tiles, dark paint from above sink to picture rail / top of walls, white or off-white ceiling. I think a dark ceiling reall could be oppressive.

Also there's something nice about lying in the bath in your soothingly darkened bathroom but looking up at a lighter (but not bright white) ceiling. As if you're the only person who's broken through to the mysterious lighter world above the soothing everyday.

Copper could look great with navy. I'd be very aware though that copper, especially lighter copper and rose gold colours are very fashionable at the moment, thus will be very unfashionable in 5-10 years time. I would consider darker 'true copper' colour but not this year's fashion colour.

Reallybadidea · 06/05/2019 10:03

It's certainly very fashionable, but that often doesn't translate well to a big standard house IMHO. I wouldn't do it in a windowless bathroom, personally. Maybe worth investigating a light tunnel, unless cave-like is what you're after anyway?

Linguaphile · 06/05/2019 10:06

I say go for it! I painted my small windowless downstairs loo navy (F&B railings, actually, so a bit darker yet), and it looks fab. We've got sort of a landing strip thing going on with the wall behind the toilet tiled all the way up to the ceiling with the same (large format) tile as the floor, so the dark is only on three of the walls which breaks it up a bit. Just make sure that the lighting is good.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/05/2019 10:09

I have a very dark blue/green bathroom, but all the tiling is plain white. I love it.

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 10:09

Dark would be too much, can you not use a combination!

SwimmingKaren · 06/05/2019 10:12

I wouldn’t just based on my brother’s room being dark blue as a teen. Light sucking and a bit dark and dreary rather than cocooning. I love the picture posted above but that’s a large, light space with windows and high ceilings, I think the reality would be different in the bathroom.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 06/05/2019 10:15

Awful, awful, awful, especially as there’s no window.

I find this current tend for dark, gloomy interiors so baffling. It’s horribly oppressive. It’s taking over from grey-is-the-new-magnolia so it’s not even especially original or unique.

Grey is dreary and everywhere

Navy and black are oppressive and gloomy and starting to be everywhere

Why do people still whang on about magnolia? Also baffling. At least magnolia is light!

palahvah · 06/05/2019 10:19

Definitely white sanitaryware. If you do navy tiles then you won't be able to change them easily and, as PP have said, if you have any hardness in the water it will be a nightmare. What about white tiles and then navy walls above? You'd still get a dramatic effect.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 06/05/2019 10:28

A small windowless room in a dark colour will be difficult to see in for me, I'd struggle to see in the mirror or to clean properly. Use a dimmer light bulb instead to make it cosy,
