Do you need a separate sink for insinkerator?

No it goes underneath the sink . It's easier to have a separate sink but not essential.

Ours is in a 1/2 sink. We have lived here nearly a year and have never used it. I want it out and a normal waste pipe put in.

Ours is in our main sink. It is very useful for the bits of food that come off plates during washing that might block the pipe otherwise.

Ours is in the main sink. It’s just connected beneath the plug hole. It’s brilliant and I hate staying anywhere that doesn’t have one now.
