Fake grass- yay or nay?

We're looking to sell in a few years and are currently sorting out the garden. I'd quite like to put fake grass down and it would probably be easier than laying it to lawn properly, but I'm concerned it might put buyers off in future. What do you think?

It can look nice, but if buying a property I'd be put off.

ElloBrian · 04/05/2019 20:30

Tacky tacky tacky.

BeardedMum · 04/05/2019 20:30

Cannot think of anything worse sorry

RedRiverShore · 04/05/2019 20:46

Definitely would put me off, horrible plastic garden.

Dontcarewhatimdoing · 04/05/2019 20:47

It would put me off.

sue51 · 04/05/2019 20:47

It would put me off.

On a small area where it's almost impossible to grow a nice lawn, absolutely, best thing ever. On a larger area, it looks a bit strange.

mamalovebird · 04/05/2019 21:09

I'm going to go against the grain here. We had it done last year and I have no regrets. We have a dog and a football mad DS so every year it was a slog to re-seed & feed the lawn back to it's best after winter. I was a bit sceptical about artificial but we went for the top of our budget and I am so pleased with it, it looks very realistic. No mud, no patches, looks great all year round. I'd say go and look at some examples and get the very best you can afford.... you get what you pay for with this. It was expensive but we have a 10 year guarantee so if it lasts that long, we will have spent the same as what we speny year on year to maintain the real lawn, but with no effort Smile

BrokenWing · 04/05/2019 21:11

We have it and in our damp soggy north facing garden and with a dog it is brilliant, but it would be a red flag the garden was damp and soggy and if I'd never had fake grass before it would put me off.

RosaWaiting · 04/05/2019 21:15

I hope to move to a house and garden relatively soon

It would put me off enormously. Defeats the point of a garden for me.

Obsidian77 · 04/05/2019 21:20

Depends on size of garden etc. I wouldn't mind it at all.

Jamhandprints · 04/05/2019 21:21

Its disgusting.

averylongtimeago · 04/05/2019 21:21

Several houses near my DD have put it down in their front gardens.
Tbh it looks fake. Now it is a year or so old it is starting to look a bit faded. On one, weeds have pushed up through the joins.

Also, I know a couple of dog owners and they report that dog pee makes it smell in the summer....

SamBaileys · 04/05/2019 21:27

We have it, we love it.
We had a patio area and put it over that last year. I'm no gardener so because it's zero maintenance it's perfect.

Bluntness100 · 04/05/2019 21:31

I would factor in the cost of having it ripped up and returfed properly. I would not discount a house I loved for it, because it's fixable, but I certainly wouldn't live with it for any length of time. I'd actually find it quite embarrassing to do so and would cringe whenever I looked at it.

It never looks real up close ie walking on it or near it, no matter how expensive, it always looks like plastic grass. From a distance it can easily do though., but not when you're anywhere close to it.

PlanBea · 04/05/2019 21:33

Another vote for nay from me. It's low maintenance but they still look artificial, and I'm not sure how great it is for the environment.

Beebumble2 · 04/05/2019 21:42

It wouldn’t put me off a great house, but I’d factor in the cost of getting rid and returning to a grass lawn.

Bamb00 · 04/05/2019 21:49

We have fake grass, as it was already down when we moved here... Tbh, I absolutely love it, and would recommend unless you have dogs... We can't seem to get rid of the dog pee smell, and it's so horrible 🤮. I'm out there every morning hosing it down, dosing it with zoflora, bio detergent, bicarb, Dettol, specific fake lawn cleaner that cost a fortune and did bugger all. Probably doesn't help that it is a very small patch of lawn and we have 3 dogs. But beside the dog wee smell, it is great as no mud or mowing, and the garden feels more of an extension of the house in the summer, it becomes far more useable. Any tips on dog wee smell irradication would be fab!!

Biancadelrioisback · 04/05/2019 21:52

Does it feel weird on your feet if you don't have shoes on? One of my most favourite things in the whole world is to stand on warm grass in the morning without shoes on and drink a coffee...

RaininSummer · 04/05/2019 21:55

It would massively put me off. So unnatural and unfair on wildlife.

Pixie2015 · 04/05/2019 21:58

We have it and love it for kids to play on all year round. Quality and fitting is so important if you want it to look natural. It was so expensive but one of the best things we have done.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 04/05/2019 22:02

Plastic isn’t exactly popular is it?

scooter125 · 04/05/2019 22:34

It's horrible.. turf is really easy to do, all that's needed is to get the ground nice and flat, I did my first lawn with it and it's taken root like nobody's business. I buy houses, do them up and sell them for a living so I know what buyers want to see. the one I did was around 20 square metres and cost less than £80...

BurtTyrannosaurusMacklin · 04/05/2019 22:37

Awful. No one thinks it's grass, so what's the point? Have real grass or don't have grass, I really don't get it! If you want a minimal effort Garden put some nice natural stone down or something.
