Fake grass- yay or nay?

We're looking to sell in a few years and are currently sorting out the garden. I'd quite like to put fake grass down and it would probably be easier than laying it to lawn properly, but I'm concerned it might put buyers off in future. What do you think?

plastic fake box balls that people hang outside their house what we they? ((I probably know I just can't think of it right now))

CylindraceousNicholas · 09/05/2019 10:13

Ah, don't worry, I know what they are Confused

I wouldn't use fake grass ever, mainly due to the environmental impact. There is such a hive of insects in a proper grass lawn (even the bloody ants whose hills have ruined my grass for the past few years) it would cause so many problems for the insect population if we used fake grass

Witchonastick · 09/05/2019 15:40

It’s not just about insects though.
Plastic grass will degrade into the soil, adding yet more plastic to our environment. It won’t last for years and will then be discarded into landfill with all the other plastics.

Grass is hardly high maintenance! And there are many other less harmful options if you really can’t be arsed. Paving, gravel or even bark chippings, if you need a softer alternative.

Drainage for plastic grass just overloads the public drainage system! Soil and turf naturally absorbs water. Drains cannot cope with extra run off water. I think that fake grass should be banned except for public pitches. There are some very self centred people on here with no understanding of wildlife and flooding issues at all!

BubblesBuddy · 09/05/2019 15:50

Gravel and paving also don’t drain naturally! Choose natural grass and soil beds. I cannot think what people did before fake grass!!!

LoafofSellotape · 09/05/2019 16:05

With gravel and paving at least you have to install drainage these days.

Rabbitmug · 09/05/2019 16:12

Of course gravel drains naturally as long as you don't put membrane underneath it

@downcasteyes yes! Hideous!! Also: fake lavender balls with fake lavender flowers. Why?????

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 09/05/2019 22:26

I'd love it, I'm in the minority in that I don't like grass. It looks nice if it's well fed and kept it whatever but I don't like walking on it and I hate sitting on it.

Ivegotthree · 09/05/2019 22:30

We love ours. We bought our house with it in and it was a plus point for the house on our opinion (smart part of London).

Lots of haters on here though!

Have* you considered the health risks that have been reported with (amongst other things) the crumb rubber underneath artificial grass?*

"Crumb rubber from tires may contain for example various metals such as cadmium, chromium, zinc, aluminium and lead; oils containing various chemicals including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as benzo (a and e) pyrenes, benzo (a) anthracene as well as phthalates. Several of these are known or suspect carcinogens, neurotoxins and potential endocrine disruptors."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5615587/

"We showed the tiny particles from the turf can become suspended in air above the field and inhaled by children playing on the field. What has become apparent is that microscopic carbon black particles break off from the crumb rubber and are small enough to be inhalable.

Additionally, the blades of grass can also break down into microscopic particles over years of exposure to sunlight and weather, forming a respirable dust."
