Hi,
Just had a Whatsapp message from our Landlady saying that she is increasing our rent. By 15%!!! Moved here July 2017, no rent increase last year.
In SW London if that makes any difference...
Is this normal?

Are you at the end of a fixed term? Or rolling? Or mid term with a rent review clause? Have they issued you formally with a section 13 and given correct notice?

They can ultimately charge what they like within the above frameworks if they follow it properly but you have the right to negotiate. You can even take it to a tribunal as long as you submit your application and it's received before the date the new rental amount is due to take effect.

Is there an agent involved or is this privately set up direct between you and your landlord?

But 15% does seem a lot but I've never rented or worked in property in London..

Trixie it is rolling contract. The only 'notice' was Whatsapp message to my husband .

It's not legal then.

She needs to issue you a formal months written notice, which you can then negotiate on, agree, or tell her to F Off and serve notice to vacate.
