Extension and moving out

Hi everyone. We have received planning permission for a 17 sq m kitchen extension and moving the bathroom upstairs (12 sq m over the kitchen). My husband reckons we will have to move out for the entire project, 6 months, as we won’t have a kitchen or bathroom. I’m dreading this and hoping the builders can help us stay in the house during the build. We have a cat , indoor and outdoor, and it would be very stressful for him to move for 6 months. Anyone have experience of this? I would be grateful for information and advice. Many thanks!

We are in the process of building an extension and are currently out of the house. However, the builders first built the outside bits and we were able to stay while this was happening. It would probably be worth speaking to your builder to see what they advise. Renting elsewhere for six months would have added a huge amount to the cost of the extension; as it is, we will be out for about 10 weeks. (Should have been less but we were delayed and currently 39+4 pregnant - DO NOT DO THIS Grin)

Hi rosettesforjill you are a brave woman! Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! I will definitely speak to the builders. Being out for part of the build would be much more preferable to the whole thing!

We had no choice but to live in our house with building work. We had no kitchen fir ages. Always had a bathroom though. The builders were great at leaving things in as long as possible for us ie washing machine. You just get on with it. Our complete downstairs was a mess and we had floorboards up upstairs etc. Good luck.

The minute you move off-site, the project takes longer because you aren't there to check.

In the words of GoT: it is known.
