Hertford vs Ware

We like the look of 2 houses- 1 in Ware and 1 in Hertford. Although I have briefly visited both towns, I don’t know enough about them to decide which would be the better area to live - so I am after opinions please!
What are the best roads/which areas to avoid? Does Hertford or Ware have better shops/recreation? Which town is better for families with young children? Secondary schooling choices in each place?
Basically any information about Hertford vs Ware would be very much appreciated.

I know them a bit as we were considering houses there a few years ago. Hertford is a bit "nicer" than Ware, although I think that's generally pleasant too. Hertford is bigger with more shops and facilities. There are lots of good bars and restaurants. It is generally more expensive than Ware. Research school places carefully, especially secondary as when I was looking there was a real oversubscription problem.

@DippyAvocado thanks for your reply. That's the general consensus of people I've spoken to - that Hertford is a bit nicer. Do you have any ideas on good roads/areas in Hertford from your research? Did you end up going for Hertford/Ware? If not, would you mind telling me why?

Hi, we didn't move there in the end. Long story but we ended up staying put in an area about 10 miles away. I don't know many specific areas but we have friends in Bengeo in Hertford who like it there. Their DC attend the primary which they are happy with.

I've not lived in either town but know them well as I went to the all girls secondary school in Ware and frequent Hertford regularly for days and nights out.

If I had the choice between the two I'd pick Hertford without a shadow of doubt. Much more desirable, more to do and I just get a better feel for the place whilst there.

Not sure about schooling in the area these days but the ones to avoid when I went back in the day were Chauncey and Sele.

Simon Balle, Richard Hale and Presdales were the better performing schools in the area at the time.

As with anywhere, there are nice and not so nice areas so I think it's a case of visiting each, view some properties and the towns themselves and see what feeling you get from them.

@CFAlert thanks so much for the reply. I get a better feel for Hertford too. Just seems that the houses in the catchment area of the good schools seem to have such a premium on their prices!

We are currently moving from Hertford after living there for over 25 years. The town has completely changed and many of the shops have closed in the town centre so it's pretty dead now.
I would go for Ware.
