Home security systems. Are they worth it?

I live in a pretty safe area (mostly retirees, no through road, people know each other etc) but have a young baby who is nearly ready to move into her own room. I have niggling concern about home safety including risk of fire, gas and breaking in. This is fueled by living in chalet bungalow where the master bedroom is upstairs (where me and DD currently sleep) and 2 bedrooms downstairs including the nursery. This means when DD moves to her own room she would theoretically be below us and downstairs by herself. In all likelihood I will sleep in the spare room temporarily but I cant do that for the next 18+ years.

I'm considering a home security system. Does anyone have one, what do you pay for it and do you think its worthwhile? I'm interested in experiences before we talk about whether to go ahead or not.

I think it’s worth it, just for added security. We had an alarm system put into our home, when we had our elderly dog PTS, he was the best deterrent very vocal, but he wasn’t ferocious in the least, would have been all waggy to an intruder 😂

Can remember what we paid, but it wasn’t very expensive. Our alarm is serviced every year, cost around £100, but that also covers us for any call outs including parts during the year.

I've always lived in a house with an alarm, that's always been used. I grew up in a quiet town in a cul de sac but it always gave us reassurance.

For me, I have an irrational fear of someone breaking in (not so much the burglary, just someone being in my house!). I'm not sure if this is a result of growing up with a burglar alarm or with a mum obsessed with a burglar alarm! Either way, for the price it's worth it for me for a bit of peace of mind.
