Freestanding kitchens

I really like freestanding kitchens, and wonder whether it would free us from having a big stressful renovation all at one time. Does anyone have one, or have any tips or useful links?

I had one in my previous flat and hated it. It was really inefficient with space and had a billion more nooks and crannies which needed cleaning than a fitted kitchen. But that might just have been the one I had (basic Ikea job).
