Semi owners, do you have a problem with noise?

Morning All. We have recently moved in to a 1930s semi and are having a problem with noise from the neighbour. He works late and so his evening starts just as we are going to bed -10ish. Mostly it's not anti-social noise but a loud tv and laughing (I know, it seems awful to complain about someone enjoying themselves.) However, on 3 occasions (we have only been in 1 month) we have been woken by loud music. Again not anti-social level but loud enough to wake us up at 4am!

So my question is this, do others have similar problems and is there anything we can do in regards to soundproofing? Upstairs we currently have floorboards and I'm guessing carpet will help and we all ready have our wardrobes against the adjoining wall. Any tips anyone?

I remember growing up in a house where my parents battled daily with the family next door as their teenage boy played his music too loud ... in the days before such disputes had to be declared on selling the house!

We live in a 50s semi. We hear the lady next door shouting at her kids; to be fair, she shouts at everybody (it's just her way) and she also shouts outside across the street (it's just her way). On the other hand, we have a loud but non-verbal autistic son (which she knows), and she can no doubt hear some of his outbursts, especially when it's a full-on meltdown. Both sides probably mutter under their breath, but no complaints are ever made, being tolerant is part of life.

(And if she's on MN, I've just outed myself!)

2010 semi, our doors are also in the middle and built in wardrobes in adjoining bedrooms so we don't really hear them ! Only occasional up and down stairs- of no consequence. They claim to never hear us (have apologised when DC has had a restless night !) I love my neighbours !

My Dad's old semi is lovely and quiet. When we had a terrace, we got a lot of neighbour noise and also neighbours smoking in the tiny garden. I think wood floors make a big difference and are far more noisy. Carpeted rooms are much quieter.

2 year old semi and I have been astonished to discover that we can't hear a thing from next door!

Victorian cottage here, can occasionally hear some noise but it's limited. Our bedroom is on the side we aren't attached on as well.

I live in a new-build semi and I have never been bothered by noise from next door. Rarely I'll hear loud laughing or shouting, but only as a muffled sound.

Tbh the garden is worse as there's a whole bunch of houses all backing onto each other and one particular little shit who thinks shouting at the top of his voice is the only way he can play.
