Advice about Yorkshire dales

Hi, we’re looking to relocate to the Yorkshire dales. We want to be about an 1 hour from York. We like rural living and love the scenery but we would like to have restaurants, cinema , shops etc within driving distance. We have a budget of c. 350k, we have two dc ages 1 & 7. Anyone recommend any areas?

One hour from York only really gets you to the edge of the dales... have you considered the moors instead?

If its definitely the dales you want then I would suggest looking around the skipton & bolton abbey area, as a starting point.

I’m flexible as long as it’s countryside living, do you know much about places in the moors?

DobbysLeftSock · 07/04/2019 15:49

Not really I'm afraid, it's just that York isn't near the dales!

Whathappenedtothelego · 07/04/2019 15:57

You could go for Nidderdale rather than the national park - closer to York, Harrogate and Ripon.
What do you mean by "driving distance?" Do you mean 15 mins? 45 mins?

Do you mean “The Yorkshire Dales National Park” or “Rural North Yorkshire,”?

QforCucumber · 07/04/2019 16:07

North Yorks moors villages such as Carlton in Cleveland, Swainby, Potto, Hutton Rudby are all approx 1hr drive from York but also close enough to Teesside for cinema and villages have shops/pubs/schools

DaedricLordSlayer · 07/04/2019 16:09

Go up and see what you think of Harrogate and surrounding area. the Yorkshire Dales are beautiful but as others have said slow to drive round and further than you are thinking from the amenities you want.

MNSDKHheroines · 07/04/2019 16:12

Bedale is lovely but I have no idea about schools.
Thirsk is a bustling market town with cinema and between the Dales and the Moors with public transport links to York. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-70759930.html

For York you’ll want North York Moors/ Howardian hills. But also consider Yorkshire Wolds. Different landscape but lovely.

Pocketfullofsunshine8995 · 07/04/2019 16:19

So ideally driving distance would be max 1 hour. Obviously been searching wrong because i didn’t think it was that far away! Sounds like the moors might be more ideal, thank you for the information!

mrssunshinexxx · 07/04/2019 16:19

Skipton springs to mind from what you have asked for x

BikeRunSki · 07/04/2019 16:19

Look at the area around Pocklington. It’s Wolds rather than Dales, but otherwise meets your description.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 07/04/2019 16:23

I'm not quite sure from what you've said if by being within driving distance you are talking abouy being close to York. Or whether you want to be within an hour of York and somewhere closer with cinema etc.

burblife · 07/04/2019 16:25

I would consider Yorkshire moors rather than dales. Most places there are within an hour of York, also close to Yorkshire coast and easy road/rail access to other major northern cities.
Plenty of retail parks etc on the edge of York for cinema/entertainment purposes.
Your budget won't stretch too far in the more popular villages but there are some hidden gems in Ryedale or the Wolds if you can be more rural.

ClashCityRocker · 07/04/2019 16:30

Leyburn/Bedale area is just about an hour if traffic is good. The a59 can be hellish in rush hour though, and I can imagine the A1m could also get a bit hairy. Similar for nidderdale, which isn't in the dales as such but is a lovely part of the world.

ClashCityRocker · 07/04/2019 16:31

But yes, moors make more sense.

Whathappenedtothelego · 07/04/2019 16:32

Are you going to be working in York? It can take ages to get round the ring road sometimes so you might want to think about which side you want to be approaching from.

DaedricLordSlayer · 07/04/2019 16:33

Thixstendale is in the very pretty. It is just over 1/2 hour to York and roughly the same to the east coast, also Malton is close. not sure about school though.

Pocketfullofsunshine8995 · 07/04/2019 16:53

Yes about an hour from York. My partner works from home and I’m a nurse, so fairly flexible.

boxlikeamarchhare · 07/04/2019 17:04

Ripon and Harrogate area. I drive to York for work a couple of times a week, 24 miles. Fantastic secondary schools, ripon grammar is the top school in the north on the Times list again. Lovely village primaries in grammar catchment.

I can be in Aysgarth in 45 mins. York and Leeds (John Lewis car park!) in 50 mins. Train from Harrogate to York and Leeds.

Don’t go too far from the A1 would be my tip.

MNSDKHheroines · 07/04/2019 19:47

Example of scenic Wolds village property. 5 miles to market town of Pocklington and 15 miles to York.

ivegotthisyeah · 07/04/2019 19:50

I'm 45 mins from York so it's that close I went to secondary school there. Fab train links for jumping on train to yours for work, shopping and cocktails. I live in a rural farming town but close enough to have cinema shops etc very close by. I love York

Starlightstar · 07/04/2019 20:09

Try nidderdale, burnt yates, patley bridgr area, about an hour to york and closer to harrogate, ripon, otley.
