Stove installation quote

We would like to remove an old Victorian fireplace and replace it with a gas (log effect) stove. We were looking at the Huntingdon 30 by Stovax. See photo of existing fireplace.

We knew this wouldn't be cheap, as we've already had a multi fuel shove fitted but are horrified at the cost of the quote. It varies between £5700-6500 depending on whether we line and put a flue up the chimney or drill through an outside granite wall to put a flue. This doesn't include any gas work/connection, hearth or removing builders rubble and plaster board/joinery work.

Do you think this is horrendously overpriced before we bother to get another quote?

Many thanks.....

We had an existing inset gas fire removed , fireplace knocked out ,brickwork floor to ceiling and a Broseley Hereford 5 stove installed a couple of years ago and it came in at around £2500 . We had also had quotes for double and triple that price so shopped around a bit .

That's ridiculous
I've just had 2 done, different companies
Both approx £1700 all in. Only difference would be the gas connection.

We had a survey, filled in fireplace knocked out, removal of rubble, brickwork cleaned up, plastering re-done, slate slips and hearth fitted, a fire surround built in oak, the flu lined, a chimney cover to stop birds nesting, carbon monoxide detector and really nice multi fuel stove installed for £3000 18 months ago.

We had a Gazco / Stovax Duplex (double sided glass box type) gas fire installed 6 months ago in a bungalow. Total was £6400 which we thought was extortionate but that included building the new internal chimney stack / flue and all plastering etc. We are in the south east, 30 miles from London.

That price included laying a new gas pipe from the meter to the new location (only about 8ft).

Thanks everyone.

As I suspected, our quotation price is not competitive. We have had them do some work before several years ago and the cost was more like £3600 for a stovax wood burner. Maybe they see us as easy money now.

I will organise some more estimates now.

Thanks once again.

I'll have the fireplace...

Aurea · 15/03/2019 22:43

I see your point but...,,

The fireplace is dangerous as there is a gap in the back which is a fire hazard. We've been advised not to use it in its current state.

It need pulling out and rebuilding in my case before it can be used.
