From putting house on market to moving to new home

How long does it take? I know you can say varies a lot dependant on circumstances. And you can get a buyer immediately and it is plain sailing, or it falls through etc.

If you have moved in last couple of years how long did it take?

Just so I can get an idea. I have been in my home for over 20 years so bit out of touch with this. But will need to put home on market this year.

First time no chain we were first time buyers living at our parents and they already had another house - 16 weeks
Second time - first time buyer having ours, we were moving to a house where the couple had split and both moved into rented houses - 15 weeks!
I was bloody fuming it took forever and we had simple chains.

wowfudge · 09/03/2019 17:32

DP said to me it would take six months. We put the house on the market the last weekend of October and moved into the new house mid April. It wasn't plain sailing and could have been quicker.

smurfmonkey · 09/03/2019 17:48

Went on the market towards the end of April last year and we moved in the first week in July so it was exactly 11 weeks for us but we had a short chain, first time buyer bought our old house and the owner of our new house moved into a new build.

We had to push quite a lot to get it done in 11 weeks, the delays were mostly around our mortgage which was annoying.

By the time we move on Friday it will have taken 20 weeks. House sold straight away, we reserved our house the next day. It should be quicker but we're dealing with a slow developer.

We put the offer in at end of August, it was accepted within 24 hours, we moved in on 5th December. Everything pretty straight forward but took ages to get info/ get searches completed etc

Hiphopopotamous · 09/03/2019 21:14

5 months and we sold it almost straight away to a first time buyer.

Hiphopopotamous · 09/03/2019 21:15

And we had already bought so we were chain free

Stylinit · 09/03/2019 22:42

We sold within 4 days of going on the market. But it took us a while (about 3 months) to find somewhere ourselves and then another almost 3 months for it all to go through. So about 6 months in total.

WBWIFE · 09/03/2019 22:43

From offer veing accepted..

First house I was a FTB and no chain and property empty room 14 weeks.

Second house was small chain and took 17 weeks.

This time it's been 5 weeks and not a lot has happened yet!!

HeddaGarbled · 09/03/2019 22:48

Most recent move was 6 months from putting on market to moving day.

RoseMartha · 09/03/2019 23:41

Thank you. Looks like averaging on 3-6 months.
The property choice I will need to move to will be very limited. Bit worried about the whole thing. I cant see house going on the market until June time.

Really depends on the people involved. Took 5 months for us to get an offer, once accepted we moved in 6 weeks. Only 3 houses in the chain though, and we were all motivated to get it through, I think I spoke to the solicitor at least every other day and made sure all documents were chased up promptly. Good luck and hope it goes smoothly.

Darkbendis · 10/03/2019 01:07

First time 4 weeks ( 1st time buyers, sellers were moving with family, no chain).
Second time, about 15 weeks from putting the offer in until we got the keys (it could have been about 12-13 weeks, but it took longer as we had a holiday booked). We sold our "old" property a couple of months later: 2.5 months on the market, then another 5 weeks until we said the final good-bye to it.

Decormad38 · 10/03/2019 01:12

House on the market March and moved mid August.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 10/03/2019 01:17

Both times had no upward chain (I was also FTB for my first property, obviously)and it still took 3 months plus. First place, the survey got lost and the second time, the vendors of the house I was buying used a one man band solicitor who went on holiday part way through!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 10/03/2019 01:18

Forgot to say, my first place sold after 6 days on the market.

Desmondo2016 · 10/03/2019 02:49

On market 14th Feb, offers made (and accepted) on our sale and purchase on that first day. Looks like we will be exchanging this week with a completion date of 1st april so will be 6 weeks. Could have completed in 4 but we have a hen weekend and a wedding so have asked to delay it til 1st April.

Cash buyers buying ours, and our vendor moving on with family. All parties pushing solicitors for progress and no issues unearthed. It can be done!
