How to get this flipping bulb out of this flipping light fitting

It's from a Victoria Plumb mirror.
You'd think I just need to insert a blade into the groove, flip the glass bit out, replace the bulb.
But I just cannot get it to separate.

Is there some trick I am missing?

Don't you use a rubber sucker thing to pull the bulb out?

TheInvestigator · 07/03/2019 11:12

Oooh, it's not just a bulb! It has a cover over it... hmm. No idea then!

Frangipane · 07/03/2019 11:13

Probably. I doubt the method involves inserting a blade into a groove. That would be rather dangerous not to mention the potential to damage the fitting.

I do sympathise. The bane of my life are modern light bulbs and light fittings. It used to be so easy! I can't advise but know that it must be something simple and easily done and try to think what that would be. Twisting one of the rings perhaps? Or pushing in, rather than trying to pull out?

LIZS · 07/03/2019 11:13

Can you unscrew the inner ring and release the glass cover?

dementedpixie · 07/03/2019 11:13

If it needs to twist to come out then use one of these:

some of those little downlighters do not have replaceable bulbs.

Have a look at one that is still working. Does it have several dots of light in a ring?

post a pic of the back please.

TarragonSauce · 07/03/2019 16:29

Hi PigletJohn!
Here's a photo of the back.
I took it to CEF this afternoon to see if they could shed any light (apols for the pun).
They said they have never seen one like it! Though they did sell me the bulb for it (G4).
I thought ugh one of those holes in the back might be hiding a spring clip so I've had a rummage around but nowt has sprung.
It's such a stoopid thing in the big scheme of things, but it's really peeing me off.

From googling it seems that people use a very small flat headed screw driver to prise the cover off

TarragonSauce · 07/03/2019 17:30

I have other lights around the house on which the screwdriver works. On this one I've tried every size of screwdriver down to spectacle screwdrivers, knives, scalpels, anything with a flat blade to it. It will not budge at all. I'm inclined to try a sledgehammer on it next.

Does the whole top bit twist off maybe?

AdaColeman · 07/03/2019 17:35

What happens when you unscrew the screw to the above left of the red paint splash?

Heratnumber7 · 07/03/2019 17:36

I think you have to replace the whole thing.

FriarTuck · 07/03/2019 17:38

Sharp knife blade inserted at edge of inner silver bit (i.e. between 2 silver discs), pry gently off. Remove little bulb inside. If you look carefully you'll see two tabs where the inner disc slots in - they're at right angles to the main bit. If you pry it next to those it comes off easier. I'll try and find a picture online to link as I've never managed to upload a photo or I could take a pic of my one.
