Can anyone give me advice on a brand / model that works well?

Ours just isn't that great.

In the specification they should say how good the grease filtering efficiency is if that's what you need.
Is it steam, smells or grease that you are finding is poor performance?

it is the smells that I am finding poor performance on

Look for one with a thick carbon filter, you might be able to modify one to have a better one.

Or try to find a way to fit an extractor. Preferably an extracting hood, otherwise a more powerful wall extractor.

A recirculating hood is primarily an ornament.
