Pentwyn near Cardiff / Newport is delightful! It's a lovely village with great access to both cities. Can't comment on schools as my friends there have younger dc, but it seems great

Shanny1989 · 27/02/2019 16:34

That sounds reassuring would you say its better than st mellons area?

It depends where you are thinking of living. St mellon's has some lovely areas but the schools are awful. If you choose a church school in Pentwyn they will feed to St Teilos which is okay.

On the other hand , if you choose a Welsh school both of the Welsh high schools are excellent.

Shanny1989 · 27/02/2019 19:16

What are the names of the Welsh schools please?
Is it ok near the leasure centre in pentwyn that sort of end?
Thank you for replying

Do you mean pentwyn in Cardiff??
It's not a village

MozzchopsThirty · 27/02/2019 20:29

I would say no to near the leisure centre it's more llanederyn (rough)
Bits of pentwyn are lovely though

Old st Mellon's is nice, excess of £350k for somewhere there though

Pentwyn a village ?!?

Pentwyn is a 1960s estate. It’s perfectly fine but some streets near flats are a little rough.

In regards to schools

Best school in area which accepts some areas of Pentwyn is Corpus Christi Catholic school. Usually there or there abouts the second best school in Cardiff after Cardiff High.
GCSE results near top of Cardiff.

Second best for area is Llanishen High but is a trek away from Pentwyn. Plus once the Lisvane estate of 3000 houses is built this will no longer be catchment for Pentwyn or Llanderyn. School is usually upper to middling of high schools in area but improving. Had a down turn when the catchement expanded but now with newer schools in catchment fringes pressure on school reduced and results going back up.

GCSE results above local average but not by large margin.

Third and fourth are Bro Edern Welsh school and St Teilos faith school. Both are perfectly ok but have mixed results.

Both just below average gcse results but Bro Edern is very new. If I lived in pentwyn I’d probably go for this school due to locality and I reckon it will come good over the years.

There will be a new high school opening in Pontprennau in about 10 years but will be madness for a few years before it’s built as all the houses are coming 1st!

Pentwyn is nicer than st melons.
Old st Mellons is nice if you’ve got a wedge of cash.

All the schools are beyond crap when they’re not on fire but I believe they have are getting replaced for fancy new ones.

We bought in Pentwyn just over 2 years ago,(previously renting in Dinas Powys, crazy house prices), we're just on the outskirts though, off the main road before the spire hospital & Waitrose, it's a nice area and I'm glad we made the choice to buy here, we make good use of the leisure centre too and we're not too far from the city centre and roath park is a 5 min drive, I think it's a good base to get onto the m4 aswell.

Inner Pentwyn maybe a bit rough looking but every area has it's downsides I think. The pros outweighed the cons for us, with 2 dc 9 & 11.

Shanny1989 · 27/02/2019 21:17

Purpledawn...thats near the townhouses and st davids primary isn't it? What about that end is that ok? Parks look nice there also the shops seem good. Would you say its quiet around there?

We're just off Pentwyn road, I think you're talking about Pentwyn drive, I'd say it's probably ok..I know there's some shops on that road which tend to have kids hanging around but I've never seen any trouble or had any trouble when using the shop tbh.

Thank you for replying so quickly, thanks to everyone who has replied today its really helped to see things clearer.
Its definitely an option to think about, its nice to hear its not a bad place to be and raise a family.
Sounds like a rather pleasant place to be.
