Is there such a thing as a lovely sofa bed?

I would love to use my spare bedroom as a tv room but I also want to have a genuinely comfortable spare double for visitors. Is there such a thing?? Any thoughts gratefully received...

There are sofa beds that look good, and sofa beds that are comfortable to sleep in. Please see Venn diagram below for the overlap:

Yes! I'm currently sitting on my very comfortable sofa bed from IKEA and I love it! It doesn't look half bad either in my opinion.

Everyone who sleeps on it says how comfortable it is.

Haha! Was just coming on to say almost exactly what AgentProvocateur has said. Sorry, OP. That's probably not what you wanted to hear.

As an alternative, how about a day bed which has a trundle bed underneath? Somehow they seem to be comfier as both bed and sofa.

Otherwise I'd suggest just buying the most expensive sofa bed you can lay your hands on. That seems to improve their comfort a bit. I currently have one that cost about £300 and it's like an instrument of torture to lie on. Is fine as a sofa though (see Venn Diagram above).

Definitely don't get one without 'legs'. Those ones where the mattress folds out onto the floor or some kind of wooden futon base are the worst IMO. I'd look for lots of springs and good solid metal legs that fold out.

I bought one from Sofa Workshop 20 years ago. It was supposed to be good enough to use as a full-time bed and is very comfortable though we have never used it except for guests. We have not even used it for that for maybe 10 years either but it is comfy as a sofa. Harder than some but still comfortable. However it weighs a tonne. I can barely move it on my own. When moving house we had to take it apart it was so heavy.

It was over £2,000 in 1998.

I have a leather one from Ikea (10 years ago) really comfy as a sofa and really good as a bed, sprung slats and a 10cm thick memory foam style mattress. I love it, guests always comment on how comfy it is, more so than the spare bedroom mattress (really should update that one) It was about £800 When I bought it.

Boopear · 19/02/2019 15:25

I have this one with foam cushions/in velvet. www.sofaworkshop.com/sofas/sofa-beds/sofa/harry/small-sofa-bed/house-brushed-cotton/sunshine/fixed Lets see if this link works It is fabioso in as both a (everyday) seating and sleeping capacity. I have the pocket sprung mattress, but memory foam also available.

Seems we’re in a minority, @hebemumsnet Grin

Have a look at the Danish Innovations range at John Lewis and on line. Stylish modern design and fully sprung upholstery. Not cheap, but excellent quality as a sofa, and as a bed.

Agent provocateur your post made me laugh inappropriately in the office!! I fear you are right....

Beebumble2 yes I have been eyeing the innovation range although I still don't think they look that comfortable. Will go and look again.

One solution could be to get a sofa that folds out with good legs and then just buy a proper mattress to use on it when you pull it out. Requires mattress storage, though, which may be a sticking point if you’re tight on space.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 19/02/2019 23:05

I second gingerandsmall we also have a friheten from IKEA and it's a perfectly comfortable sofa, whilst also making a great bed (effectively king-size when set up)

Aph413 · 19/02/2019 23:10

Having just spent a week on my own dfs sofa bed for renovation purposes I can safely say none of theirs! I did however have the ikea lycksele as a sofa for a long time and it was a fabulous bed. You can choose better quality mattresses and slats too, not sure if it's a style you'd like though.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/02/2019 23:17

Ikea beddinge sofa bed was ace. Not sure if they still do them. Not amazingly comfy sofa without a lot of added cushions though

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 19/02/2019 23:19

Ektotp ikea sodabed . Proper mechanism ans mattress topper so one of the better beds to sleep on....

But is pretty average looking.

Beebumble2 · 20/02/2019 07:13

ehohlala they are very comfortable. We have one, so we can use the spare bedroom usefully.
They are full size double beds when flattened, you can adjust the ends to tilt up for comfort when watching tv We didn’t tell last guests we had that it was a sofa bed and they said they had a wonderful nights sleep, before we let on it was a sofa bed.
We do add a padded mattress protector and you have to use a fully fitted sheet as there’s nowhere to ‘tuck in’.

CheerioHunter · 20/02/2019 07:17

There are sofa beds that look good, and sofa beds that are comfortable to sleep in.

Exactly that. We have one that looks lovely, but, God, its uncomfortable.
End up giving visitors a couple of duvets to lay on top of as well. (A mattress topper would probably be ideal, but the price doesn't seem justified when it gets used as a bed once or twice a year.).

LifeCasting · 20/02/2019 07:21

Usually is say the same as PPs about comfiness of beds but my friend recently bought the Ikea Friheten (? I think? Grey) which opens up into a firm mattress & its very good!

I think AgentProvocateur has it.

It's like a shampoo and a conditioner. Sounds good but are opposed actions.

Best fit is all.

bettyblueeyes83 · 20/02/2019 08:18

I would 100% recommend Willow and Hall and have been raving about them to everyone www.willowandhall.co.uk/sofa-beds/all-sofa-beds.html.

Customer service is excellent and I'm so happy with my sofa bed. In a one-bed flat it's my only sofa and very comfy - and guests say the memory foam bed is lovely to sleep on. I love it!

ehohlala · 20/02/2019 10:08

Bettyblueeyes - I love the look of this one, thank you!

Kescilly · 20/02/2019 12:07

We had the opposite experience with Willow and Hall I’m afraid! Really disappointed with them after we spent so much ££££.
