I would love to use my spare bedroom as a tv room but I also want to have a genuinely comfortable spare double for visitors. Is there such a thing?? Any thoughts gratefully received...

Haha! Was just coming on to say almost exactly what AgentProvocateur has said. Sorry, OP. That's probably not what you wanted to hear.
As an alternative, how about a day bed which has a trundle bed underneath? Somehow they seem to be comfier as both bed and sofa.
Otherwise I'd suggest just buying the most expensive sofa bed you can lay your hands on. That seems to improve their comfort a bit. I currently have one that cost about £300 and it's like an instrument of torture to lie on. Is fine as a sofa though (see Venn Diagram above).
Definitely don't get one without 'legs'. Those ones where the mattress folds out onto the floor or some kind of wooden futon base are the worst IMO. I'd look for lots of springs and good solid metal legs that fold out.
