I have been quoted £11,000 to decorate a 4 bed 1960s terrace in NWLondon

I nearly fell off my chair ! The house has been freshly plastered 2 years back and only needs repainting in the same colours, to cover cracks and freshen up - both ceiling and walls. The property is furniture free with no one living there.
I think it is super high, and before going for other quotes, thought I would ask here for those with experience of London painters rates.
Thanks in advance

How long timewise are they saying?

Zaggybuns · 12/02/2019 21:00

NC4Now - they can do it in 2 weeks starting next week

It's £200 per manday round here plus the paint. They do work fast though.

burritofan · 12/02/2019 21:00

Does that include the liquid gold paint or do you have to supply your own? DIY it! Much easier on decently plastered walls.

anniehm · 12/02/2019 21:00

I paid £500 recently for a normal sized room (not London) and was quoted £1500 for my hall way on account of needing scaffolding due to the height. For a whole house it seems steep as you would think that there's economies of scale but London costs £££ more than here. Get a variety of quotes from both larger companies, family companies and self employed then make a decision - it may work out cheaper to split the job though as most builders would assume you have substantial means to want to decorate an entire house (most of us do it ourselves room by room)

DorindaLestrange · 12/02/2019 21:01

WTAF?

Get more quotes in. They are having a laugh.

brick15 · 12/02/2019 21:02

Ridiculous! They’re trying to pull a fast one

RandomMess · 12/02/2019 21:03

Wonder if my local decorator would come and do it if he can kip there overnight?

Zaggybuns · 12/02/2019 21:03

Anniehm
I have never decorated and now selling to move on so do not want to risk it, also doing it alone is too scary !

Do you have a lot of woodwork? Panelled doors, fancy skirting, dado, picture rails all needing painting?

Zaggybuns · 12/02/2019 21:04

Thank you so much, I thought it was a RIP OFF !

TowelNumber42 - just modern architraves and skirting boards and they do not even need painting....its just the ceilings and walls !Its a 1960s house with no features really

What a complete and absolute joke of a quote.

alwaysthinkingofsleep · 12/02/2019 21:14

That's insane...to be fair I am at the opposite end of the country to you but I'm about to pay £100 per day for a fantastic decorated. He will be painting new units, all woodwork & freshly painted plaster. Doing 4x coats of paint on all walls & woodwork will take him approx 2 days per large room. Someone is taking your eyes out!!!

TowelNumber42 · 12/02/2019 21:24

By my decorator's rates that quote would be for 5 skilled decorators to work full time on your house for those two weeks. Nah.

Chocolate1984 · 12/02/2019 22:05

£220 a room here for ceiling, wall& woodwork. Guy painted our double height hall & bathroom for £400. Ours is a 3 bed 1960s house.

Chocolate1984 · 12/02/2019 22:05

The rooms are roughly 4m x 4m.

ZenNudist · 12/02/2019 22:09

Nope rip off. DIY. All you're doing is painting walls and ceilings. They are having a giraffe.

AiryFairy1 · 12/02/2019 22:09

Maybe try find someone not VAT registered? We had a similar quote for similar size property in sw London and after my jaw left the floor we found someone much more reasonable (local, and on checkatrade)

Dillyson · 12/02/2019 22:10

I've just paid £800 to paint dining room, sitting room, kitchen, hall stairs and landing. I supplied the paint.
It took 7 days.

Ontheboardwalk · 12/02/2019 22:19

Are they fitting a kitchen and bathroom for that price!

NW here and for decent decorator you’re talking £200 a day. You can get handymen/people for £100 a day but they seem to take more than twice as long

DerelictWreck · 12/02/2019 22:25

They're essentially asking for £1k a day!!!

Even if they work 10 hours Hmm that's £100 an hour! And there are what, 2 of them? So £50ph each?! Madness

Motionoftheoceon · 12/02/2019 22:31

Not a chance - we had our whole 4 bed house in the SE painted from being replastered. Three coats in each room, all walls, ceilings and woodwork. It came to 4K, I’d laugh and walk away for what they have quoted.

trickyex · 12/02/2019 22:32

Ridiculous.
Keep looking.

Mrskeats · 12/02/2019 22:33

London is insane.
