Non-slip solutions for painted stairs?

We want to paint our stairs. DP is worried about slipping, which is fair enough (we have a small DD, one on the way and a very elderly MIL who stays a lot).

I'd love to hear any solutions you've tried for this. From a quick google, it seems there are some non-slip paints but would be great to hear personal experiences of how effective they (or any other solutions) are.

Thanks!

I had varnished stairs in my last house (a very good quality tropical hardwood) and they were lethal. Never did fall down them but my mother constantly worried that I’d fall and knock myself out on the wall at the bottom of the stairs.
Would a carpet runner and painted edges be acceptable?

you do live in a detached house, don't you?

Otherwise your neighbours will break down your doors and hack you to pieces due the the noise of traffic on the bare wooden stairs.

Don’t do it! Absolutely lethal. Not even exaggerating. I grew up in a house with wooden stairs and they are SO dangerous for the elderly and small children. Just put a runner down. But avoid sisal as this is also slippy when it gets a bit worn. (Here speaks the voice of bitter experience...)

I have painted stairs. B&Q floor paint. They are slippery in socks. One of my children hates wearing socks, and barefoot is not slippery!
No one has fallen yet, and the paint sealed the smelly wood from previous owner neglect! Long term I'll get them carpeted though.
