Would you buy a home without a bath?

Just pondering this question.

We will be starting a total renovation soon. It will be our family home for 5-10 years but we will then sell on. We have not used a bath for years - youngest is 11 years old now but obviously did when they were small. So I'm thinking, why install a bath when we could have a lovely walk in shower...

However, would it put people off buying a house with 2 bathrooms but no bath? Or would people just look past it and put in their own bath if that's what they need.

I would love to hear thoughts please.

Ten years is a very long time. If it suits you not to have one take it out and worry about it in ten years' time.

You're likely to at least redecorate your bathroom in the next ten years. You might even decide you want a bath again in the meantime.

I'd be ok with no bath but given a choice of:
shower and no bath,
shower over the bath,
bath and no shower
I'd pick shower over the bath.

ThanksItHasPockets, It's not that I am trying to be frugal but, honestly, why would a shower take more than 3 minutes especially if people have super duper so powerful showers? How long can it take to wash even if you are also washing your hair?

If I really wanted to be frugal I am pretty sure I could cut the time down more or just turn the shower off while I am washing.

Do people really update their bathrooms that often? Posters saying in 10 years a bathroom will need redoing surprise me. For me kitchens and bathrooms are the rooms that don't get redone very often as they usually cost far more than any other room in the first place

No. Big bath fans, couldn't be without one.when we stay with in-laws we have to have only showers, and we're both dying for a bath when we get home.

I guess if a house was otherwise perfect and there was room to fit a bath without too much work/disruption, then I'd consider it.

We bought a house without one. No plans to add one when we replace the existing wetroom. Love having a wetroom.

I think there is a common fallacy that baths use more water than showers, but in this day and age of powerful waterfall/rainfall showers I'm not sure that's true (especially for those people that spend 20 minutes or more in said shower).

This. I MUCH prefer a bath, and for a 'daiily wash' type bath, I don't even have it that deep. I'm darned sure that all of my dc use FAR more water every time they shower. I can assure mydogisthebest no-one in this house EVER has a shower and is out in 3 mins.
I tend to wash my hair separately - shower over the sink - and it takes me more than 3 mins, even with a short haircut, I think you must be quite unusual to be able to wash your body and your hair in under 3 mins.

I wonder what an estate agent / valuer would think

Ladymargarethall · 31/01/2019 22:47

I think mydogisbest probably has a smaller body than me. Grin

I did because it had potential for one in the future but I lived here for three years before getting it done and one of those with a baby!

We've since extended which included putting a bath in.

mydogisthebest · 01/02/2019 13:50

BackforGood, I can easily shower and wash my hair (very short) in 3 minutes. I can't honestly see why it would take any longer.

My DH takes around the same length of time or sometimes is even quicker.

What do people do in showers that takes so long? I just want to get in wash, wash my hair, rinse and out again not faff about

MikeUniformMike · 01/02/2019 15:41

I have been in hotels where there is a power shower over the bath and have put the plughole in. A powershower uses more water than a bath.

scaryteacher · 02/02/2019 16:14

MyDog Dh's flat in Brussels had a bath, and each of the houses we have rented here have had baths. In fact, the current rental has three!

scaryteacher · 02/02/2019 16:17

MyDog is evidently a submariner, as dh takes slightly less time than that. I take about 7-10 minutes, especially if my hair needs conditioner on for a while.

AliceRR · 02/02/2019 16:20

I moved into DH 2 bedroom end terraced house and we have renovated the whole house to sell including windows and doors, bathroom, kitchen etc as well as the rest of the house. We had a bath but made the bathroom into a trendy wet room with large walk in shower. It wast DH’s idea and bjs thinking was our target market was young couples / first time buyers whom that might appeal to. We had a lot of interest in the house and people love the bathroom so I don’t think it put people off.

The house we are buying doesn’t have a bath and I love a bath but the house needs EVERYTHING doing and we are buying it because it’s the right house in the right place.

I don’t think lack of a bath would put people off if they like the house as they fan out one in if they like (and I know a lot of people who are not that into baths) and if you’re still going to be there for a decade potentially I’d do what you want in the house.

mydogisthebest · 03/02/2019 11:28

Scaryteacher, maybe it's mainly flats in Europe that don't have baths then. As I say, I have only rented Airbnb places but not one of them has had a bath or room for one (bathrooms really tiny).

I honestly do not see how a shower can take 10 minutes. I guess if you have long hair and are conditioning it but personally I would get out of the shower to do so.

My hair is very short and literally takes less than a minute to wash. I don't condition it every day (probably once a week) and usually don't wash it first. I only leave the condition on for 2 minutes.

Linguaphile · 04/02/2019 16:12

I live in Europe and I don't think I've ever been to someone's flat that didn't have a bath. We have two bathtubs in our house.
