Would you buy a home without a bath?

Just pondering this question.

We will be starting a total renovation soon. It will be our family home for 5-10 years but we will then sell on. We have not used a bath for years - youngest is 11 years old now but obviously did when they were small. So I'm thinking, why install a bath when we could have a lovely walk in shower...

However, would it put people off buying a house with 2 bathrooms but no bath? Or would people just look past it and put in their own bath if that's what they need.

I would love to hear thoughts please.

yes. buying one atm.
will not be putting in one either when we move.

Notso · 27/01/2019 14:41

I would. I haven't had a bath since I was pregnant with my youngest and he's nearly 7.

We're renovating a house and had a vote on whether to have a bath with a shower over it or a walk in shower in the family bathroom. Kids voted for a walk in shower, which surprised me as three of them do enjoy a bath.
We don't plan on moving in the next 10 years. The bathroom will need updating by then so will review the situation then if we're thinking of moving.

I see that is a very valid point. If I were to convert my loft I have a large double bedroom area with low head height over the master bedroom. It would spoil the house if put in a dormer, i would use this for storage. But I’d agree a loft is very handy for storage.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2019 15:12

Our loft space is effectively. Unusable due to bats roosting in there. However the garage has a workshop attached, and basically that has a mezzanine level, which is what we use as a loft. If there is enough head room, then it's quite cheap to put a mezzanine level in, and use that for storage.

I would have to have a bath.

It wouldn't stop me offering on a house per se, but I would factor in the cost of having to redo the bathroom in my offer and if there was another property I liked that didn't need similar working doing it might turn things in favour of the other house.

rytonsister · 27/01/2019 15:16

only if i could redo bathroom and put one in.

PenguinPandas · 27/01/2019 15:18

I would want a bath, wouldn't totally rule a house out if otherwise worked but would mean I would have to take a bathroom out and refit so quite a big negative.

mywigwamneedsnewflaps · 27/01/2019 15:21

I would only buy if a bath could be fitted in ,
We looked at a lovely flat but the bathroom was just too small to accommodate the smallest of baths so made it un-purchasable for us

aethelgifu · 27/01/2019 15:24

No

BifsWif · 27/01/2019 15:25

No, we didn’t even view houses without a bath, even though some were lovely looking houses, when we bought recently

keepingbees · 27/01/2019 15:43

No. I like a bath occasionally and you need a bath really if you have small children. Seeing shower room rather than bathroom always put me off a house. People don't always want to have to put one in either as they see mess, hassle and £££.
If it was your forever home then do it to your needs, but otherwise I would try and get one in.

flatpackbox · 27/01/2019 15:45

I would if it was otherwise perfect and there was room to put one in but I need a bath in my home, I love having a bath.

swirlette · 27/01/2019 15:47

It would definitely put me off. I'd still buy if it was the right house, but would offer less as I'd factor in replacing the bathroom.

NaToth · 27/01/2019 16:05

We took our bath out twelve years ago when we had the bathroom redone. For us it was a huge mistake.

CinnamonToaster · 27/01/2019 16:10

Lack of a bath put us off houses at the top of our budget. Those well within budget, no problem.

I think on your timescales go with what you like. Walk in showers rather than baths might be all the rage in 15 years. I think houses with no bath are much more common now than they were 10 years ago.

Bringbackthestripes · 27/01/2019 16:17

No. Even though we all just use the shower daily there are still occasions when a long soak is needed.

Mrsrockwell · 27/01/2019 16:19

No

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 27/01/2019 16:25

No no no no no.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 16:27

Of course. As long as there was space to put one in. Bit bemused by people who'd walk away from an otherwise suitable house just because they'd have to have a bath fitted.

Ragwort · 27/01/2019 16:31

Only if it was really clear that there was space/option to put in a bath. I love my bath, I have a bath every single night before I go to bed (so does my teenage DS - not together obviously Grin). I almost feel a bit uncomfortable if for some reason (staying away from home) I can’t have a bath!

greenelephantscarf · 27/01/2019 16:33

tbh I fing this bath obsession weird.

1hello2hello · 27/01/2019 16:39

Yes in your case because you have 2 bathrooms so I'm expecting a decent size family house.

We moved last year to a house without a bath because the one bathroom had been converted to a wet room with just shower. Plans have already gone in for an extension so we can have a second bathroom with a bath.

1hello2hello · 27/01/2019 16:40

That was yes it would put me off.

planespotting · 27/01/2019 16:42

Yes because in my home country we don't have baths in most houses, you have showers.
You don't need a bath. You need a shower and you might like a bath.
Such a waste of water, ok as a treat, but daily?

PenguinPandas · 27/01/2019 16:46

The danger is as well a buyer might need a whole new bathroom to get a bath in and in that case you could be talking £7k to £10k, and most people would take more off for hassle or walk away. If its a big bathroom with space left for a bath then it would affect things much less. Was watching Sarah Beeney and she was telling someone they wouldn't sell their house with no bath. Wouldn't go that far but in reality I probably wouldn't buy a house without one unless it was amazing / very underpriced.
