uPVC sash windows - prices?

AwkwardPaws27 · 22/01/2019 08:59

Hi,

Old uPVC windows needs replacing, house is an Edwardian semi (not a conservation area), I'm considering uPVC sash.
Wood is definitely out of budget.

I don't want to waste someone's time and then be badgered for months getting a quote until I have roughly enough saved / work out if I need to remortgage. We have 11 windows (counting the bay as 3), most are in the region of 900mm X 1600mm.

If you have had uPVC sash in the last couple of years, would you mind saying how much it was (and for how many windows)?

I've never bought windows so utterly clueless!

Thanks!

I suggest finding a good local firm to come and quote - its generally the large nationals that will bug you for ever and they are more likely to quote high and then bombard you with special deals if you sign immediately on the dotted line.

Avoid the large national companies, hard sell and £££ unless you really need financing packages then Anglian was the cheapest one who quoted for us (Everest quoted 3 times that of Anglian!) safestyle are horrible sexist and a bit crazy - they wouldn't see me alone and called back and asked to speak to my dh (who avoids all household issues like the plague) who was fooled into letting them come (the your wife said to call routine) he wouldn't give a price to let us think about it and only spoke to my dh! Crazy company, their rudeness knows no bounds.

Local is best, get three quotes. Didn't get sash but we have paid about £400 a window 3 years ago all in, large toughened glass with multiple openings

I've got a recommendation from a neighbour who used a local company, so will try them for a quote and just be honest that I may not be able to book straight away as we may need time to save / arrange credit. I hope they would be ok about that, I don't want to waste their time but equally don't know if I'm looking a £500 a window or £1500 a window.

A quick google suggests about £300 per window to supply and if you then get your own man in to fit perhaps £40 an hour for two days. Total job potentially all in for about £4K.

AwkwardPaws27 · 22/01/2019 20:54

Asdf12345 I considered that, but it's unlikely to be FENSA accredited or covered by a guarantee.

I'd rather get it done properly, especially if I'm paying extra for sash, and have a FENSA certificate in case we sell up and so there is a guarantee in place. There was neither for the current windows, and they are poorly fitted and draughty.

I’ve just been quoted 2 @ £540 and one at £500 by a small local firm.

AwkwardPaws27 · 22/01/2019 22:06

PostNotInHaste thank you, that's a reassuring figure!

We've just had 2 quotes for sash windows and anew front door. There are 5 windows, ones quite small, and both quotes are in the £6k region including the door. It's a smallish terrace near Manchester. That's fitter, fensa guarantee etc. Small local firms.
The windows are approx double the cost of regular casement windows.

Thanks Soontobe60

PostNotInHaste what sort of size are your windows and are you in the south east? You seem to have found the best deal on sash windows Smile

113cm x 173cm for two of them and the other is slightly smaller I think, gutted I can’t stretch budget to them and having to go for casement. He’s south west but looked at website and the sash he supplies are Ecoslide, you can ask on website for details of local suppliers.

AwkwardPaws27 · 02/03/2019 12:19

I just thought I'd update. I've had two quotes so far (for 8 uPVC sash and 3 standard uPVC windows). One was £9200 (after haggling), the other... £18,500!
Need to get more quotes ConfusedGin
