Laminate or Carpet?

Moving house soon and having new flooring throughout. Every room has been decided apart from living room.

DH thinks we should carpet. I'm maybe 80/20. 80% wood effect laminate and 20% carpet. He says laminate would be a mistake and more costly and we are on a tight budget.

I can see pros and cons for both.

For context we have two cats. One baby who is close to crawling and DH's four kids EOW

Definately pros and cons for both

Carpet gets so dirty with children-spilling food drinks paints etc...My once cream carpet is now a mixture of shades...in my defence I was childfree when I choose it and wish I had wood or laminate for the weaning days

Either get a very good quality laminate with a few rugs for warmth or a cleanable carpet that will disguise dirt....laminate would really show up the vat hairs though!! And not very comfy for baby crawling

@Milly90 yep! Totally why I have this dilemma.

Think carpet would be much nicer for DS to crawl around on and softer but then I remind myself of stories from friends of their LO's pulling their nappies off and peeing and pooping everywhere!

Also at the weekend one of DH's kids managed to get chocolate all over my fabric sofa which then melted and got sat on!

I'm just as bad tbh. Had a Chinese a few weekends ago and stupidly didn't take my plate to the kitchen before going to bed...doh!!! One of the cats pulled a bit of leftover off the plate and dragged sweet and sour sauce across my light rug. will always take my plate out straight away now

Feel like Laminate would be the safer choice but DH venhemntly against it

I agree carpet is better for your DC to crawl on. My nephew has just started crawling and is struggling on my sisters wood floor.

My living room is oak floor, which I love and have a large rug. It’s great / easy to clean after the SDC have been. However if we move to a new (large house) I would have carpet in the lounge.

I would say if you have a separate dining area, and living area for the DC (a lot of houses now have living, kitchen, dining), I would have carpet in the lounge as a less formal area. Then set ground rules, like no eating tea etc for the DC in the lounge. As carpet is cosier, and softer on the feet.

If you don’t, get laminate and a new large rug, to make it cosy.

You can see pros and cons for both, he has a strong opinion. The obvious answer for me is go with your partner's preference.

It would be a big compromise for him to go with laminate. Why make him do that when you are 50/50 anyway?

Actually apologies, I'd scrolled past your 80/20 by the time I started typing. I take it back! So you're fairly strongly favouring laminate.
