Herringbone style tiling

We are planning on having bathroom re-done and I like the look of herringbone tile pattern for the walls. The only style of tile we have as yet agreed on is metro but given it's the bath-shower I don't want loads of grouting.

So looking at rectangular shaped tiles 30 by 60. Any thoughts as to whether this would look ok? Or is this too large for a herringbone pattern to look good? Am thinking light grey with darker grout, very pale blue with white grout or white with grey grout.

I think it depends on how big the room is. If it's a small bathroom the effect will be somewhat lost if there aren't many pattern repeats across.

I think this will depend on the size of the area to be tiled. You need enough space to really get the Herringbone effect with tiles of that size. It's also quite on trend at the moment so I'd go with the white & grey grout for a more dateless look.

Great thanks both, it's a bath with shower above so planning on tiling along the back wall of the bath and at the end where the shower is so would be a reasonable size. I think I probably would end up going for white and darker grout. Just wasn't sure if 30 by 60 tile would look too big.

Might measure it out properly later and see how many rows would fit in, it's an old house so high ceilings.

We have herringbone in our bathroom, the tiles are 7.5cm x 30cm and it looks really good. You will pay extra in tiling though as it takes ages to do. I will try and attach a picture.

Trying again...

It works better in longer tiles so 30x60 might be too rectangular iyswim. Maybe brickbond style?

Thanks Smasht, yes I actually just measured out 30 by 60 and realised that would never work as its huge!! Yours looks really lovely, that's exactly what I'd like but possibly with a darker grout. How much more do you think the tiling cost you than it you had gone for something more regular?

I can't really estimate as it was done as part of a bigger job and the builder didn't give a breakdown. It took ages though with all the angles that have to be cut and matched to the pattern. Also involved a lot of swearing by the tiler Grin.
