Enough space for kitchen diner

Is a 28.8ft x 12.8ft area big enough for an open plan kitchen/ diner plus a sofa?

Can anyone recommend any design tools I can work it out on?

IMO it depends on the size of the property. Generous for a one bed flat, might be tight for a 5 bed detached (to fit a sofa in ). I would make sure the kitchen area is a proportionate size for your property, rather than cut back to comfortably fit in a sofa. Having said that, it is a large space, so I'm sure it's possible, I'd have u shaped kitchen one end, dining table in middle, narrow sofa against wall other end.

It is a five bed detached but the current kitchen is 14ft4 x 12ft 10 and dining room very similar

Check out the website home by me. Need a computer as can't do it on your phone but really useful for building designs. It gives 3d views as well as view of being in the room

Yes, that's definitely big enough. We have been house hunting and also want a kitchen/diner with room for a sofa and tv. You'll be able to do that with those dimensions.

And you gain a few cms when you knock down the wall between the two rooms. Get an extending table and a smallish sofa and you should be fine.
