Shoes and coats - how and where does your family store theirs?

Inspired by a thread about utility rooms and the answers on their, I’ve been thinking...
We recently bought a house with a utility room. I’m v excited about have a whole room with my washing machine in. My plan was to hang coats and store shoes in there too. But all those shoes and coats take up so much blooomin space and maybe that utility room space would be better off used differently. The utility room links to the garage which is clean and dry, I’ve wondered whether I could utilise that space?

So my question is... how and where do you store your family coats and shoes. I don’t mean best coats and fancy shoes... just day to day ones. The two or three pairs that you wear during the week ?

The eternal question..I await the accumulated wisdom of Mumsnet!

clippityclop · 06/01/2019 23:10

Coats, ie couple most frequently worn by the four of us are in the hall on hooks. There are about three pairs of shoes on the floor underneath along with various kit bags. It drives me nuts. We're knocking through into the garage to make a bigger hallway with room for proper storage.

Littlelambpeep · 06/01/2019 23:10

We have hemnes shoe storage and love it! Also vintage hooks (store a few children's jackets and rest on hook behind utility door.

clippityclop · 06/01/2019 23:13

Posted too soon! We're thinking of a bench seat for shoes and a big wardrobe for the rest.

SuziQ10 · 06/01/2019 23:13

Coats and shoes messing up my hallway / house.

If I had a utility room I would buy a big white or modern looking wardrobe for it & use as a little cloak room. If washer fits in the room too that's a bonus.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 06/01/2019 23:15

We have some coats in utility on hooks but most in understairs cupboard. Shoe rack for less used shoes in understairs cupboard and .....

Proud of this but had a local joiner make me a shoe cupboard next to front door with touch opening cupboard for shoes and lots of shelves. It is on two levels so also doubles as a seat to sit on when putting on or taking off shoes.

He designed it from my garbled description and I bloody love it. My hallway is so tidy now and not a shoe pit

clippityclop · 06/01/2019 23:17

Littlelamb thank you for mentioning hemnes shoe storage. Think this is what we need!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 06/01/2019 23:24

I’m about to order a small shoe cabinet from Wayfair for our hallway because I am so fed up of shoes messing up the hallway. Three pairs of shoes and a bag or two and it’s a mess!

Our coats are often over the bannister post in the hall too which bugs me and looks untidy so my DH is under instruction to make the top of the cellar stairs more presentable by boarding it out so we can put decent set of coat hooks up for our day to day coats. The cellar door is off the hallway so this should work quite well

BackforGood · 06/01/2019 23:46

Mostly been worn ones on the hooks in the hall.
Unless you are entering your house each time via the utility, it doesn't make sense to try to get them hung in there - the point is, they need to be read to access as you go out and the hook, as you come in.

Shoes, we keep on our feet.

Had a carpenter build a pull out cupboard in our staircase, I was so sick of tripping over all the shoes and bags cluttering up the hallway! It's a complete godsend!

It's much like this one -

Sorry, posted too soon, here's the pic -

Shoes and coats - how and where does your family store theirs?
DustyMaiden · 06/01/2019 23:59

Coats in coat cupboard, shoes in shoe cupboard, in the hall. DH liked building cupboards.

jigster01 · 07/01/2019 06:01

lurpak are you able to post a photo or two please ..I want something like that for a refit of a porch ..there are regularly 8 people in our house ( always 6 ) and the shoes drive me mad !

Phillipa12 · 07/01/2019 06:11

I have a large hall so my coats are on one coat rack with a shelf above for glove/hat storage, and a large shoe basket underneath. And under the stairs which is open plan is a settle bench which stores all the dcs school bags and above that is the dcs coat rack. The utility room is for welly boots and my smelly running trainers!

I'm ashamed of our coat hanging situation. Previous owners stored everything in downstairs cloakroom/toilet. If we extend the house this all changes as I find it unhygienic. However coats still end up on stairs and shoes still end up in hallway.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 07/01/2019 06:49

We have a small house and a VERY tiny hallway, but I feel we've got a system.rhat works quite well now.

Shoes on shelves in the understairs cupboard (4 shelves, 1 for each person).

Coats on hooks in tiny hallway, BUT:

  • Adult coats go on upper hooks on hangers, so they stay pretty flat against the wall rather than bulging out and ambushing us!
  • Kids' coats go on hooks lower down, below the adult coats.

In case it's of use to know where hats, gloves etc go....

  • Adult hats and gloves live in a basket on a shelf above coat hooks.
  • Kids have a basket each in the understairs cupboard which houses gloves, hats and school bags etc.
knittedjest · 07/01/2019 06:52

In their closets or if they are going to be worn immediately in closet under the back stairs in the back hallway which is pretty much a closet anyway.

amyboo · 07/01/2019 07:33

We have hooks in the hallway for kids coats, an Ikea bench shoe rack thing for everyday shoes (it has 2 rows for shoes then you can sit on it to put shoes on), then in an alcove we have an Ikea shoe cupboard for extra shoes and another set of hooks for hanging schoolbags on. Adult coats go in a built in cupboard next to the downstairs loo, where we also have a couple of shoe boxes for boots and a shelf for spare bags etc. Hats and gloves etc go in one of those basket thingys in the bottom of an Ikea kallax/expedit bookshelf in the hallway.

minipie · 07/01/2019 08:42

@LurpakIsTheOnlyButter I would love to see a pic of your shoe storage too - planning something similar.

At the moment coats go on hooks understairs (but it’s also the way down to the cellar so gets in the way and not safe for small DC). Gloves hats etc go in baskets on the shelf of our small hall table. Shoes go under the hall table in theory, but get lost/stuck under there so in practice are left lying around in the hall.

MummySharkDoDo · 07/01/2019 09:17

Not exciting, a traditional coat stand, kids on lower hooks and a tall shoe rack next to it. Small hall! Over flow under the stairs

SSRainbow · 07/01/2019 09:24

I have a large cupboard ideal for storing coats and shoes... however on a daily basis I have multiple pairs just kicked off around the hall... coats over the banister - drives me mad 😡 I also have a bench built in with drawers for scarfs hats etc... never any in there when I need them...

TheMincePiesAreMine · 07/01/2019 11:59

In our VERY tiny hallway. I had old fashioned shoe cubbies made, like pigeon holes. One coat per person generally, plus an optional packed up pacamac, and the rest live upstairs. Periodically I nag the kids to remove their various extra shoes.

Secondsop · 07/01/2019 21:44

Lots of different things in our house. We have a Hang-It-All for adult coats, and a little low set of iron hooks for kids coats. Above the iron hooks we have a wall-mounted crate for bits. Eg phones, wallets, hats, the screwdriver for the doorbell which is always getting lost otherwise, keys etc. We have another wall-mounted crate for other bits. Then on the floor under the HIA we have a wooden boxy set of shelves that I found in the shed when we moved in, which we keep lots of shoes in. Against the other wall we have the kids scooters and above them are 3 hooks for school book-bags. We have a wide enough hallway for things not to get in the way but we do get shoe-creep sometimes. My pet hate is things on the banister so all the other stuff is to avoid that. We also have another area as you come
In and go round the corner, which has a unit in with carrier bags, a mirror, another wall-mounted cabinet, a space for the pram, a couple more hooks, and a crate for pram / baby stuff. Blimey typing that makes us look ridiculous but it is quite low-maintenance - the only tidying it ever needs is a push-back of the shoes into their shelves.

NormHonal · 07/01/2019 21:48

Spent thousands of pounds restructuring and renovating the house to solve this problem (amongst others).

Ultimately, you need a good joiner to build you a bespoke cupboard or two.

I know friends in houses worth over £1m who don’t have anywhere to put their coats and shoes!

And this is why housing developers need to employ female architects....

cowfacemonkey · 07/01/2019 21:54

Under stair cupboard. We have a large utility room but I prefer coats and shoes in here as it makes more sense for them to be close to the front door. Plus I have a rule that we are only allowed to own as many coats and shoes as the space has room for so stops it getting cluttered and messy or for coats and shoes to end up in other places.
