Just bought our first house (thanks to lots of advice on this forum!!) and since we’ve spent pretty much all our money on he deposit we are buying super cheap furniture with the view of doing it up! Bought this small wooden wardrobe for £2” which I think will go in bedroom, some of it is veneer but i checked and can still be sanded.. just struggling for inspiration as it’s an odd design, and I quite like it how it is! But it has a few stains on top so think it needs something done! I’ve been pinteresting a lot but if anyone has any ideas/ photos of similar projects I’d be very grateful Grin

It’s lovely the way it is. I’d give it a clean and a wax and leave it at that

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 05/01/2019 18:09

I'd normally recommended you to AnnieSloan the bejasus out of any "brown" furniture, but that's unusual and lovely, so don't!
Loads of soft wax and buff it up.

Christmascookiesmmmm · 05/01/2019 18:41

Thanks for advice that sounds good!! Yes I agree it is lovely and unusual so will keep as is!! Sorry I’m a complete novice, how would you recommend cleaning and which wax would you use (googled soft wax and hair products come up haha)

Looks like 1930s Art Deco style, looks like it might suit your house to leave it like that, just a bit of waxing should do.

Thewixxx · 05/01/2019 18:43

Is your house about that age?

Christmascookiesmmmm · 05/01/2019 18:48

The house is Edwardian, this is the fireplace in the bedroom that it would go next to, haven’t painted walls yet but thinking a greige colour and might strip out carpet at some point and paint floorboards white :) (there are more of the red tiles under the carpet at the fireplace!)

Yes I thought it might be Art Deco from the feet! My partner says it looks like it came out a church (better than my purchase before this which he said looked like it came off the street!!)

It’s more Art Nouveau than A Deco. Nouveau was late Victorian early Edwardian. Eg William Morris. The wardrobe is fairly plain and probably late in the era as it’s nit solid oak or similar hardwood but with a good clean and wax, it will be great. The veneer looks intact so that’s good.

That's just the thing I'm looking for 😩

Springmachine · 05/01/2019 23:11

Gorgeous furniture! No idea why more people don't do it and instead buy expensive items made of chipboard

Bluntness100 · 05/01/2019 23:14

Only put bare floor boards in your bedroom if you're happy with cold floors and noise echoing downstairs. The reality of bare floorboards in a bedroom is very different to the fantasy.

Jorgezaunders · 05/01/2019 23:16

It's lovely, I'd leave it as is.

wowfudge · 05/01/2019 23:27

For cleaning it, I'd use sugar soap - especially around the handle. That dirt is sweat and skin particles from years of hands opening it. I cleaned the varnished oak doors in our house with sugar soap and they came up beautifully.

Christmascookiesmmmm · 07/01/2019 13:49

Thank you @wowfudge going to get some sugar soap today! @Bluntness people do keep telling me that :(( just the carpet is a bit dirty in places (it’s from the previous owners) so I thought we’ve got nothing to lose by getting rid and trying the floorboards, maybe lots of lovely soft rugs?!? And then if we hate it we can put down new carpet!

Thank you for all your advice, very happy to clean and leave it as it is, o think I’d have ruined if I tried to paint! Going to start a new thread with another one of my finds (the one my partner says looks like it came off the street ;) ) soon!!
